The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park is just a short 20 minute drive up the Stuart Highway from Coober Pedy and is the second Aboriginal-owned Park in South Australia. The Kanku-Breakaways is co-managed by the Antakirinja Matuntjara Yunkunytjatjara people (AMY), the District Council of Coober Pedy (DCCP), and the Department for Environment and Water (DEW). The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park

holds great cultural significance for Antakirinja Matuntjara Yunkunytjatjara people. The Kanku-Breakaways is geologically important in providing a habitat for arid flora and fauna and a perfect example of breathtaking views and scenery, which appear different throughout the day as the sun moves across the escarpment, highlighting the different colours found in the formations. The Kanku-Breakaways has also been home to some well-known Australian movies including; Mortal Kombat, Mad Max 3 – Beyond Thunderdome and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Stunning scenery, coloured hills with a backdrop of green! Don’t forget enter and exit the park via the Stuart Highway entrance only at the moment.

***Roads Update***
The top road from the Stuart Highway to the Lookouts is now OPEN to 4WD/High Clearance vehicles.

The bottom road from the lookouts to the Kempe Rd is still CLOSED to all vehicles

There are areas where there water has pushed sand onto the road and caused erosion as well as some damage from vehicles entering when the road was closed. Please use caution and drive to the conditions.

The road from the Stuart Highway to the lookouts is OPEN to all traffic. Please use caution and drive to the conditions.

The road from the lookouts to the Kempe Rd is still 4WD only due washouts caused by the recent rain.

All roads in Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park are now open to 4WD or high clearance vehicles.

***ROADS UPDATE***

The road from the Kempe Rd to the lookouts is now OPEN TO 4WD ONLY.

The road from the Stuart Highway to the lookouts remains closed due to safety concerns involving boggy areas and pooled water. Provided this area does not have any traffic while wet we hope to be able to open this section at some stage in the next few days.

***ROADS UPDATE***
Just because roads look dry doesn't mean they are dry. If road are closed please do not travel on them!

The roads in the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park are still CLOSED. We have water sitting on the top road (Stuart Highway to lookouts) and very wet and muddy conditions on the bottom road (Kempe Rd to lookouts).

DIT also have the Kempe Rd closed so access via the Kempe Road entrance will not open until the Kempe Rd closure is lifted.

At this stage we are anticipating roads will stay closed until at least Saturday. We are checking them each day and as soon as we can safely open them we will post another update.

All roads within Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park are closed for safety reasons.

We will continue to frequently monitor the roads and will post updates here when conditions change. We will open the roads as soon as it is safe to do so.

***Roads Update***

Following rain last night and rain again this morning there will be some road closures in the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park.

A more detailed update will follow as inspections of roads are completed.
