We're in for a wet start to the week with severe thunderstorms possible ⛈️
For inland NSW and the ranges, localised heavy rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds and large hail are all possible Tuesday before shifting along the northern coast and ranges. Conditions are expected to settle late Wednesday or Thursday.

⚠️ A minor flood warning has been issued for Tumut River due to rainfall forecast from late Monday night into Tuesday.
⚠️ A minor flood warning is also current for the Murray River at Barham.

The NSW SES advises:
🏡Prepare your property now ahead of the storm. Secure loose items that can be blown away in strong winds. Clean your gutters and downpipes to avoid blockages. Fix any broken tiles or damage to your roof. Move your car away from under trees.
🚗 Steer clear of floodwater. If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route. Flash flooding can be dangerous and unpredictable. Stay vigilant.

🌟 This week we’d like to introduce our recently promoted and qualified In-Water Flood Rescue Operator: Bernie!

We’ve asked them a few questions to share with our community, and perhaps inspire others to join? 👀

🥕So Bernie, how long have you been with the NSW SES and what motivated you to join?
I’ve been a member of the NSW SES for 14 months. After my previous experience in the Australian Army, Corrective Services NSW and Australian Border Force, I wanted to continue doing something meaningful for the community. The SES was a great opportunity to volunteer, learn new skills and help people when they need it most.

🥕What is the best part about volunteering for you?
Definitely the people and the teamwork. There’s a great sense of camaraderie, and I really enjoy working with people who are willing to step up and help others. I also enjoy the training, learning new skills and being challenged along the way.

🥕Finally, if you could tell us one fact about yourself, what would that be?
I love travelling and trying new food. I’m a big believer that a great holiday should involve a bit of adventure, a few good cocktails and some seriously good food!

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for most of the South West Slopes Zone. We have received a number of 000 calls for trees down over roads. Please take care if travelling overnight with further calls expected as the storms move east.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in South West Slopes and parts of Southern Tablelands, Riverina, Snowy Mountains, Central West Slopes and Plains and Australian Capital Territory Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:10 pm Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

Severe thunderstorms occurring through southern parts of the state.

Weather Situation: A cold front is moving through the south of the state this evening. Thunderstorms developing along this system will be fast-moving towards the east.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Yass, Young, Tumbarumba, Cabramurra, Selwyn and Cootamundra.

98 km/h wind gust was recorded at Deniliquin Airport at 8:39 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

The NSW SES is advising people in the following area(s) to STAY INDOORS due to intense rainfall, flash flooding:

- Wagga Wagga
- Griffith

You should monitor the situation as it is constantly changing.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises tropical humidity continues on the eastern flank of a low in the far southwest of the state, resulting in a broad rainband with isolated thunderstorms. This system is moving slowly eastward and is forecast to be over the eastern Riverina by Tuesday morning, with rainfall clearing from the west in its wake.

Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is possible over eastern parts of the Riverina, South West Slopes and Southern Tablelands overnight. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 70 to 90 mm are possible.

The risk of HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL is forecast to ease throughout during Tuesday morning.
