WHY WON’T HOBART CITY COUNCIL LISTEN TO LOCALS?

Respected CBD business people have spent their own money commissioning a report into the very real issues facing our city — yet instead of listening, the Council and Deputy Lord Mayor dismiss and trash it.

In my view, that shows disrespect not only to the report, but to respected local businessman Andrew Edwards and the broader business community trying to make Hobart better.

For eight years I have said the same thing: LISTEN TO LOCALS!

Residents, ratepayers and businesses who live, work and invest in Hobart deserve to be heard — not dismissed.

This October, send a clear message: enough is enough.

SUNGLASSES – WHY? 😎

Some may be wondering why I’ve been wearing sunglasses lately.

No, I’m not trying to be Tom Cruise! 🤭😎

Unfortunately, I’ve been dealing with an eye infection and very sore eyes. So, if you see me at meetings, out door knocking or walking the streets of Hobart wearing sunglasses, there’s a medical reason behind it. 🤕👀

On a much more positive note — new photos with my door-knocking vest!

Very happy with how they turned out. 😊

HOBART’S RATES RIP-OFF

This notice does not provide all the facts! It’s spin to make out that the 3.5% rates rip off is justified…it is not!

Hobart ratepayers will pay another 3.5% rate increase for 2026/27, while Council is budgeting for a $3 million surplus.

At a time when households and businesses are struggling with a cost-of-living crisis, Council should not be collecting millions more than it needs from ratepayers. WHY?

A $3 million surplus represents roughly 3% of Council’s rate revenue. Ratepayers deserve to ask a very simple question: Why are our rates going up 3.5% when Council is budgeting for a $3 million surplus?

Council doesn’t need another multi-million-dollar surplus to spend on ideological and utopian projects. It needs to cut waste, control spending and get back to basics, roads, footpaths, traffic management, essential services and keeping our city clean and safe.

And don’t be fooled by the so-called “independents” dressed in Green clothing. Their claims about transparency and accountability deserve close scrutiny. Too often it appears there is one set of rules for their own and another for everyone else.

Higher council rates ultimately mean higher costs for residents, landlords, businesses and consumers.

Enough is enough. Hobart ratepayers deserve value for money, lower rate increases and a Council focused on the basics.

The rates rip-off is alive and well in Hobart, and this election, ratepayers can do something about it.

MY LETTER TO EDITOR PUBLISHED IN MERCURY.

City in lights is a safer City.

Imagine our CBD without adequate street lighting. 🤷‍♂️ Darker streets can make people feel less safe and can create conditions where crime and antisocial behaviour are harder to deter and detect.

Our traders, businesses, workers, residents and visitors deserve a CBD that is bright, safe and welcoming, particularly at night.

Hobart businesses are already dealing with enough restrictions and challenges. The last thing we should be contemplating is making our streets darker.

Council should be concentrating on the basics — safety, services, accessibility and supporting business.

We need to LIGHT UP HOBART — not turn the lights down.

Enough restrictions. Enough is enough.

Let’s put common sense and the needs of our City first.
