🌿 Plant of the Week: Common Emu Bush

Looking for a hardy native plant that brings colour to your garden and helps support local wildlife?

This week’s feature plant is Common Emu Bush (Eremophila glabra ssp glabra).

Common Emu Bush is a spreading shrub growing up to 1.5m high, with striking orange-red tubular flowers from September to November.

It grows well in clay, clay loam and sandy loam soils, and is a great choice for attracting nectar-feeding native birds to your garden. 🐦🌺

We have 50mm tube stock available now for $4.50 each.

🐣 Meet the next generation of Kangaroo Island glossy black-cockatoos!

Our Glossy black-cockatoo recovery team has been out carefully banding chicks as part of long-running monitoring work to better understand how these special birds survive, move and breed across the island. 🖤💛

Leg banding is widely used across Australia and is carried out in conjunction with the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme. On Kangaroo Island, this work has been happening since 1995, helping build an incredible picture of the lives of individual glossy black-cockatoos over time. 🔍

Nestlings are banded at around 6–9 weeks old, before they leave the nest. These small bands help the team track survival, family groups, movement between flocks and how young birds contribute to the population as adults. 🌿

Thanks to this work, we know that if young glossies make it through their first year, their chances of surviving in following years are very high. We’ve also recorded a 26-year-old female still successfully raising young — a remarkable insight into the life of this endangered species. 🐦

A big shout out to the dedicated team, volunteers and landholders who continue to support glossy black-cockatoo recovery on Kangaroo Island. 💚👏

👏 Big shout out to the Dudley Peninsula community! 🐾

🙏 A huge thank you to the Penneshaw Progress Association and everyone who came along to the community BBQ to learn more about the Dudley Peninsula Feral Cat Eradication Program.

🎯 The 2026 Winter Knockdown is underway, with the team aiming to remove more than 95% of the remaining feral cat population from the Dudley Peninsula landscape.

With specialised tools, skilled practitioners and strong community support, the program is well placed to keep making progress.

🐶 Thermal technology, drones, cage traps and cat detection puppy Trig were all on show — giving the community a closer look at the work happening on the ground.

Community support is critical. Every landholder conversation, every sighting report and every show of support helps.

❄️🐸 Winter is coming… and so is the FrogWatch SA Winter Census!

Kangaroo Island has had some welcome recent rain — and that means frogs may be on the move.

Frogs become more active after rain because their skin needs moisture, and temporary pools can create ideal conditions for calling, moving and breeding. So now is the perfect time to prepare your ears and help record what’s happening in your patch.

The FrogWatch SA Winter Census runs from 1 to 8 June, and KI residents can take part by recording frog calls through the FrogSpotter app.

You don’t need to be a frog expert — just record what you hear, upload it, and FrogWatch SA can help identify the species.

🌱 Good soil decisions start with good support.

Healthy soils can make a real difference to everyday farm operations — from water use and nutrient cycling to productivity, input efficiency and long-term property planning.

After strong local interest in the recent Soil Health Workshop with David Hardwick from Soil Land Food, the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board is now seeking expressions of interest from primary producers who would like to take part in future free soil health workshops. The workshop focused on practical ways landholders can better understand soil carbon, organic matter, nutrient cycling, soil testing and landscape rehydration.

The Board works alongside KI farmers to provide practical, local support that helps turn information into useful on-farm decisions.

Whether you are looking at soil testing, pasture health, water use, revegetation, shelterbelts, property planning or ways to reduce input losses, our team can help connect you with information, resources and support.

🦘 From the brink… to recovery.

After the 2019–20 bushfires, the endangered Kangaroo Island dunnart was at serious risk of extinction. More than 90% of its habitat was lost.

But here’s the incredible part 👇

📸 Since then, thousands of detections have been recorded across the island
📍 The species is now being found in more than 100 locations
🛖 New tools like artificial refuges are helping provide shelter while habitat recovers

This is real progress — and it’s happening right here on Kangaroo Island 💚

The Kangaroo Island Landscape Board has been leading the on-ground effort — working with partners and the community to monitor, protect and support the recovery of this unique species.

This research was conducted by the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board in collaboration with the National Environmental Science Program (NESP), with support from WWF-Australia’s Eyes on Recovery program, Zoos South Australia and the SA Government
