🏉 STREAKY BAY OVAL – TEMPORARY CLOSURE FOR LAWN MAINTENANCE 🌱

Council, on behalf of the Streaky Bay and District Community Complex and its associated clubs, advises that the Streaky Bay Oval is temporarily closed to all use while important lawn maintenance is undertaken.

Preparations are already underway, with irrigation areas marked out ahead of works commencing next week. Maintenance activities are expected to continue through to the end of September.

🚫 During this time, please do not enter or use the oval for recreational activities, including walking or exercising dogs.

Keeping people and animals off the oval will help protect the irrigation works and newly maintained playing surface, giving it the best opportunity to establish and be ready for future community and sporting use.

🙏 We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while these important works are completed.

📣 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

On 26 August 2026, District Council of Streaky Bay CEO Damian Carter appeared before the Federal Parliament’s Inquiry into Local Government Financial Sustainability at its public hearing in Port Lincoln.

The hearing provided an important opportunity to highlight the very different financial challenges facing small regional and remote councils.

For Streaky Bay, the issue is not simply about becoming more efficient — it is about fiscal capacity.

Council raises approximately $4.5 million each year in general rates while being responsible for around $138.7 million in listed assets. That equates to approximately $31 of assets to maintain for every $1 raised in general rates. Those assets are spread across more than 6,200 km², including 1,736 km of roads, more than 360 km of coastline and 10 dispersed communities. Our population also grows from around 2,300 residents to more than 4,000 people during the summer period.

Council’s message to the Inquiry was clear: small regional councils must continue to pursue efficiencies, collaboration, shared services and new technologies — but efficiency alone cannot overcome a structurally limited revenue base.

Council advocated for reforms including:

• The Financial Assistance Grants formula better recognise road length, asset burden, remoteness, seasonal populations and limited revenue capacity
• predictable, long-term infrastructure funding for councils
• infrastructure support to enable housing growth in small regional communities
• stronger protections against cost shifting between levels of government
• recognition of the role councils increasingly play in enabling essential regional services when no viable provider exists
• investment in shared services, digital transformation, automation and artificial intelligence to improve the capability and productivity of smaller councils.

As Damian told the Committee, the fundamental question is whether a well-managed small council can continue to maintain essential infrastructure and services without unaffordable rates, deferred asset renewal or broader government responsibilities being shifted onto local ratepayers.

Council welcomes the opportunity to contribute to this important national discussion and will continue advocating for funding arrangements that recognise the realities of delivering local government services in regional and remote Australia.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗽 𝗨𝗽 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘆 📚

A new community project is bringing together books, creativity and community spirit, with the first two of 10 Street Libraries now installed across the District of Streaky Bay.

The District Council of Streaky Bay project has been brought to life with the help of local schools, community groups and the Streaky Bay Men’s Shed, making it a wonderful collaborative effort across the district.

Installed in time for Book Week, the first libraries can be found outside the Streaky Bay Visitor Centre, painted by local artist Abbey Dunbar, and at the Streaky Bay Community Garden, painted by Year 8 and 9 students from Streaky Bay Area School.

The project aims to make books accessible to everyone and encourage people of all ages to read, borrow, swap and share.

It has been a real community effort, with the Year 8 and 9 students, supported by teacher Hannah Riley, creating four colourful libraries inspired by our local region. Arts Up are completing another four, while Karcultaby Area School students will decorate two libraries for Wirrulla and Poochera.

The Streaky Bay Men’s Shed has helped protect the artwork with two coats of clear sealant, while Council’s Works Team attached the posts and installed the first libraries.

The concept is simple — take a book, leave a book, or swap a book. Pick up something to enjoy at home, read with the kids, or find a sunny spot and settle in with a new story.

Council is still seeking good quality book donations to help keep the libraries stocked. Donations for all ages can be dropped into the Streaky Bay Visitor Centre.

Keep an eye out for more Street Libraries appearing around the district over the coming months — and most importantly, get out there and enjoy them!
