Severe weather can happen quickly, but a little preparation now can make a big difference when storms hit.

The NSW SES recommends 3 simple steps to stay storm-ready:

Take action before severe weather arrives. Secure loose items, clear gutters and drains, check your property and make sure your household knows what to do.

Keep up to date with trusted warnings and information. Follow NSW SES and check official weather and emergency warnings so you can make informed decisions as conditions change.

When severe weather threatens, put safety first. Follow official advice, avoid unnecessary travel and never drive through floodwater. Make safe decisions for yourself, your household and your community.

💜 WEAR IT PURPLE DAY 2026 💜

Today, NSW SES Sutton Unit proudly recognises Wear It Purple Day, standing in support of LGBTQIA+ young people and promoting inclusion, acceptance and respect.

We believe everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and supported for who they are. Our volunteer community is stronger when everyone feels they belong.

Our volunteers work tirelessly around the clock - between family commitments and work, we spend much of our free time training and responding to help our community in times of need.

Yesterday we scheduled time out of our busy lives to come together for some board games, cheese and laughs.

One of the highlights was the NSW SES Monopoly board, with the spaces all relevant to the work we we.

Thanks to our volunteers and their families for joining in on the afternoon, and congratulations to Luca for winning a very competitive game!

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER WARNING - DAMAGING WINDS

📍Locations which may be affected include South Coast, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains.

⛈️ Weather Situation:
Vigorous westerly flow has extended along much of the Great Dividing Range today in the wake of a cold front. Winds are expected to shift southwesterly with the passage of a trough overnight into Tuesday, gradually easing later into the day.

Stay safe and prepared:
🔸 Move your car under cover or away from trees and powerlines if safe to do so.
🔸 Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
🔸 Unplug computers and appliances and avoid using the phone during the storm.
🔸 Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
🔸 Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
‼️ Never walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.

It is with great sadness that NSW SES - Sutton Unit acknowledges the unexpected passing of fellow emergency services volunteer, Irene, from our local area this morning.

For more than 20 years, Irene dedicated her time to serving the Windellama community as a member of NSW SES Windellama Unit and as a First Responder. Her commitment to helping others and her service to the community will not be forgotten.

On behalf of everyone at Sutton we extend our heartfelt condolences to Irene’s family, friends and all members of Windellama SES during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with you all.

A service to celebrate Irene’s life will be held at Craig’s Hill Crematorium on Thursday, 6 August, at 11:00 am.

Rest peacefully, Irene. Thank you for your years of selfless service to our community. You will be sadly missed. ❤️

Good luck to our Sutton Sugar Gliders, taking part in the State Disaster Rescue Challenge at the Endeavour Energy Technical Training Centre in sydney this weekend.

⚠️ AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

‼️ On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The test times across Australian time zones are:
• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)
• 1:30 pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill NSW)
• 12:00 pm AWST (WA)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.

If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

UPDATE: Telstra have advised that services should now be restored. If your Telstra device is still experiencing connectivity issues, please power the device off and then back on.

NSW SES is aware of a widespread Telstra outage impacting mobile customers on Wednesday 8 July.

The NSW SES remains operational and ready to respond to incidents.

🔸 There is no impact to our 132 500 phone line.

Members of the public may have connectivity issues with a Telstra device and are encouraged to call from a different carrier, landline or a neighbours phone.

☎️ For a life-threatening emergency situation, call Triple Zero (000).
