Wamboin and Gundaroo brigades have returned to stations after a two vehicle accident earlier this morning near the Federal Highway/Bungendore Road intersection. NSW Police and NSW Ambulance also attended the scene.

We congratulate Hoskingtown-Rossi Rural Fire Brigade on their 80th Birthday yesterday. Like most rural brigades, they were established by locals, wanting to provide a service to their community. Many brigades in the Lake George District have members who have made a commitment to be part of their local brigades for decades, and even up to 70 years of service! A successful brigade is one that gets new members to continue to join and continue to protect their communities.

Some photos yesterday from Fire and Rescue NSW Mudgee yesterday of a fire that thankfully triggered a smoke alarm. It’s a reminder to have working smoke detectors in your home!

A call-out tonight for an “unknown fire” had both Wamboin and Sutton brigades looking hard to find any property numbers in the dark. Fires and other emergencies do occur in the dark, and valuable time is lost when if you can’t identify a property. Consider a large reflective number on each side of your letterbox, so oncoming drivers can see it from either direction. Next time it could be your place we are trying to find!

With only 73 days until the statutory Bushfire Danger Period start, your preparation that involves burning vegetation should be well underway. A predicted “Super El Niño” is set to be well underway in spring, with lower rainfall and increased temperatures. It is possible that the BFDP may even start earlier in some areas. Last season proved that when permits were required, many were refused, and for those that were granted permits, many were suspended for a lot of the BFDP due to unsuitable weather conditions. If you plan to burn, do it now while conditions are perfect.

Just as important to be prepared for the fire danger period, now is the time to prepare for the cooler temperatures when your fire fighting equipment isn’t required. When freezing temperatures arrive, water can be your enemy to water pumps. Ice forming can expand and damage or destroy your portable pump, so look for the drain plug, remove it and put it in a safe place. A fire fighting pump is an expensive asset which should last for decades if maintained and protected from the elements. Remember also to remove that old fuel from the fuel tank and carburettor for best results.

Tonight’s training for the 16 members had a run through of the Lake George District Category 6 bulk water tanker. The tanker has a capacity of 9000 litres and has many features including a bumper mounted monitor (water cannon) which can be operated within the cabin with an electric joystick. The water spray can easily reach distances up to 30 metres! The Cat 6 tanker is an asset available to all brigades in the Lake George District and has endless possibilities, but best suited for large incidents requiring large amounts of water, saving tankers having to travel distances and time to replenish their water tanks. We thank the crew from Bungendore RFS for taking the time out this evening to show its capabilities!

The official end to the Fire Danger Period is midnight tonight. A fire permit is not required for a planned burn in the open from April 1 until October 1.
HOWEVER, “Burn notifications” are mandatory for 365 days a year. You MUST notify on the RFS portal AND notify ALL your adjoining neighbours at least 24 hours prior to lighting your fire.
Please ensure when you are notifying us of a planned burn, you use the following QR link or a quick internet search “Notify the RFS” or “Burn notification” will get you to the RFS portal.
Failure to notify can result in a fine of up to $1100, and often leads to unnecessary call-outs of local RFS volunteer brigades, wasting valuable time and resources that could be used for real emergencies.

We’ve had some rain. There are still some hot days coming and with a little breeze, the moisture in the dry grass will disappear and the fire danger will rise. Wednesday’s FDR is expected to go to high. If you have any workers on your property who perform any “hot works”, it’s mandatory that they include some sort of Fire extinguishment equipment or water supply. It’s normal practice in all contractors insurance policies, that any hot works are monitored during and after work is completed and the appropriate fire suppression is available at all times.
