A weekend of footy, new experiences and goals achieved in Melbourne! On 31 July, 10 members of the Sydney Swans Social Group travelled to Melbourne with Anne Louise to cheer on the Sydney Swans at Marvel Stadium.

The trip was about much more than the footy. Travelling interstate together provided opportunities to build confidence, strengthen preparation and planning skills, negotiate shared living arrangements and navigate a new area of Melbourne.

This was the groups’ third trip to Melbourne, and they have travelled to most states now, including NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western OZ. They consider themselves Seasoned Travellers! They are already hoping Tasmania might be the destination for their next adventure in 2027.

Alex, a member of the group, likes to roll solo and took the opportunity to visit the Eureka Tower and Melbourne Skydeck on his own. A highlight for him was exploring the elevator system, which connect closely with one of his interests. Alex enjoys learning about different elevators and creating YouTube content about them, making the visit a particularly meaningful part of his Melbourne trip.

Other members of the group share similar interests and chose to spend time together. They go together and come home together - whatever happens on these unique and authentic trips is GOLD! It's even an extra bonus when they come home with a win up their sleeves! GO SWANS!!!!!!

This is a wonderful example of how shared interests can support confidence, independence and connection, supporting both meaningful social connections and individual achievements.

Last week, we officially launched THC’s refreshed Reward & Recognition Program with our first Quarterly Awards ceremony, held at the THC office and across the Roseville, William Street and Artarmon projects.

The program has been created to recognise the incredible contribution our people make every day — from the impact they have on our teams and services, to the way they advocate for the people we support.

Our new quarterly awards celebrate two areas in particular:

🌟 Impact in Action – recognising people who demonstrate ownership, initiative and make a meaningful impact across THC.

💙 Client Advocacy in Action – recognising people who go above and beyond to uphold the voice, dignity and best interests of the people we support.

We also celebrated staff reaching important service milestones, recognising their ongoing commitment and contribution to THC.

A huge congratulations to everyone who was nominated and recognised this quarter. Every nomination reflects someone making a positive difference through the work they do.

🏆 And yes… this quarter’s winners have been announced!

Keep an eye on our upcoming posts as we introduce our first Quarterly THC Award winners and share the stories behind their recognition. ✨

Faridah has been engaged in our Customised Employment Program for the past year, where she's been working towards turning her passion for art into a micro-enterprise. One of her wonderful achievements has been creating a collection of handcrafted postcards, some of which have been purchased by staff employed at The Housing Connection, as birthday cards or to celebrate other occasions. ✉️

While Faridah's health has meant taking a pause on some of her enterprise goals, her creativity continues to inspire us. We're working alongside her Support Coordinator to explore new ways to adapt her plan and support her aspirations at a pace that works for her.

Every journey looks different, and we're proud to showcase Faridah's talent while accessing practical supports for photography, archiving, and building an online presence for her paintings. 🎨

For over 3 months, David has been part of our Gardening with Purpose program, working alongside Social Educator, Anthony, to develop practical gardening and landscaping skills.

From weeding and lawn mowing to planting new gardens, David has embraced every opportunity to learn while building his confidence and independence. Anthony describes David as a bright, organised and quick learner who takes great pride in his work, always making sure the tools are carefully cleaned up and packed away at the end of each job.

David's hard work has certainly made an impression. One of the homeowners has been so delighted with the quality of his work that she specifically requests David for her gardening needs—and even bakes him homemade apple cinnamon muffins as a special thank you.

Programs like Gardening with Purpose provide meaningful opportunities to build practical skills, confidence and work-ready experience in a supportive environment.

🌱 If you'd like your garden maintained while supporting this valuable initiative, or would like to learn more about the program, contact Anthony at [email protected].
