At approximatel 10.15am on Saturday 18 July, vessel TU21 was maneuvering for docking practice at Preddys Wharf, when we noticed a lad trying to start his outboard, without much success.

Once away from the dock, we travelled the short distance to see if we could assist. The young man was grateful for the help and the crew quickly had the small (12 foot) boat in a raft tow, delivering him safely back to Preddys Wharf.

After passing on the details to Marine Rescue Batemans Bay Base, we continued our training exercise.

Training continued successfully with the crew finalising the refuelling and close down around 12.00pm.

At approximately 1.00pm, we received the notification to urgently assist a disabled vessel with three persons on board, drifting towards the rocks near Bingie. Crossing the Bar we were informed that a passing vessel had towed the vessel away from shore and, the urgency of the situation was downgraded.

TU21 met with the distressed vessel, and the other vessel, about 1.5 nautical miles east of Mullimburra Point, and quickly commenced the tow, which was smooth going.

TU21 crossed the Moruya River bar without incident. After transfer from long tow to the raft (side by side) tow we successfully docked and secured the vessel at Preddys Wharf.

We're proud to congratulate member Lucy Williams, who passed her Coxswain (Restricted) exam today. Lucy becomes the first female in our unit to hold this position.

Lucy is also an active member of our Executive team, and coordinates our fundraising BBQ's at Bunnings.

Members Veronika Tuckey and Lucy Williams joined fellow Marine Rescue volunteers at the “Women in SAR” professional development conference in Batemans Bay yesterday.

Congratulations to member John Sutton (right of photo).

John qualified on 23rd April as a Coxswain (Restricted) and is able to command vessels up to 12 metres on enclosed waters and near coastal areas. He can also command our vessels during search and rescue situations.

To achieve this rating, John was required to pass practical and theory assessments. As a Skipper, John will lead and deploy crew and provide a vital response capability to the Unit.

His rating represents skill, commitment and dedication to assisting not only the Unit, but to the community.

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

It was an absolutely brilliant day yesterday for our annual Golf Day and Dinner, at the Moruya Golf Club.

Blessed with perfect weather, participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf, a putting competition and an all day sausage sizzle; topped off with a celebratory dinner, which included an auction of donated prizes, by Christine Ewin, Managing Director of My Agent Team, and a raffle.

A big thank you to all major sponsors, golf hole sponsors and the wonderful local businesses who donated an array of gifts for the auction and raffle. Your support was greatly appreciated.

Thanks also to the Moruya Golf Club for holding our event again this year, and the terrific staff at the club who helped make it happen.

All proceeds raised during the event go directly to helping our operational costs such as fuel and maintenance, so we can continue to keep you safe on the water.
