New England NSW SES The NSW SES is the local combat agency for floods and storms in the New England/North West Zone

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, sto

rm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. ⚠ Thunderstorm Warning ⚠

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that severe thunderstorms are possible as the current weather system moves across our zone during the afternoon.

These severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Tamworth, Gunnedah, Warialda, Barraba, Quirindi and Mullaley.

Where possible move your car away from trees and into cover, please make smart decisions on the road and never ever enter flooded roads or causeways.

⚠️ Weather Update ⚠️

With the forecast for a bit more rain heading our way from tonight through the end of the week, the NSW SES are moving one of our Unimogs into the area in preparation. This vehicle will be stationed at Narrabri for the next few days and will be available if needed.

Please remember this is only a precautionary measure, we want to make sure we have assets in place in case the need arises as part of our normal operational procedures.

If you do see the team out and about in the Unimog, or any of our vehicles give the guys a wave.

⚠⚠ Weather Update ⚠⚠
The Bureau of Meteorology have advised that there is more rain expected this week across the Central West Slopes and Plains, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands forecast districts.

The rain could start as early as this afternoon, with the heavier falls expected towards the end of the week. These heavier falls could be 20mm-40mm widespread on Thursday and 15mm-40mm possible on Friday.

Thunderstorms are likely from Wednesday with a chance of isolated severe thunderstorms.

With the predicted rainfall, we are likely to see some river rises across the zone. Please use the Hazards Near Me App to stay up to date on the current situation.

Localised heavy rainfall is a possibility with severe thunderstorms, the NSW SES wants to remind everyone to make smart choices on the road, always drive to the conditions and please never enter flooded roads or causeways.

It was great to finally see some much needed rain across parts of the New England and Northwest overnight, widespread falls of around 30-40mm have ben recorded across the region with some higher isolated totals recorded in the Upper Peel catchment (55-75mm), Gunnedah (60mm) and Mt Kaputar (73mm) in the 24 hours since 9am Monday morning.

Light rain is continuing to fall in southern parts of the region but is forecast to clear up as the morning continues.

Rivers and creeks have responded to rainfall with small rises. In some cases, flow has returned to creeks that have been dry for weeks.

Widespread riverine flooding is not expected, however some low lying causeways and parkland may become inundated as flows move downstream.

As always we are asking the community to drive to the conditions and never enter flooded roads or causeways.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that most of the Northwest Slopes and Plains forecast districts are expected to see some much-needed rain today, with the possibility of lighter falls over the next 24-36 hours.

While this rain is welcomed across the area, the NSW SES are asking people to still be mindful of the conditions. Heavy rain downfalls on a very dry catchment may cause excess run off and this could lead to potential flash flooding of low-lying roads, causeways and caravan/camping locations along river systems.

Please always take care on the roads, always drive to the conditions and never enter flooded roads or causeways.
