NSW SES Gunnedah Unit

NSW SES Gunnedah Unit The NSW SES (New South Wales State Emergency Service) Gunnedah Unit It is made up almost entirely of volunteers, with 229 units located throughout the state.

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is an emergency, preparedness and response service dedicated to assisting the community of NSW. The units comprise of approximately 10,000 volunteer members, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in

the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USR), evidence searches (both metropolitan and rural) and other forms of specialist rescue that may be required due to local threats. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales. The Service's trained rescuers also support the full-time emergency services during major disasters. The NSW SES assists other emergency services when they are performing major operations. These services include the NSW Police Force, the NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Engagement programs like FloodSafe, StormSafe and TsunamiSafe. These programs are supported by strategies and resources, are delivered locally through a range of activities and events and are a priority for the NSW SES. The aim is to engage at-risk communities on preparedness, response and recovery measures so that there is no loss of life and impacts caused by these events are minimised. This in turn builds community resilience to floods, storms and tsunami. For further information visit the NSW SES website at http://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/

Gunnedah Shire Council is calling on businesses, services, education providers and industries to secure their spot at the 2026 Gunnedah Youth Expo on Thursday, 23 April.

The annual event in the Town Hall is part of NSW Youth Week and is an opportunity for youth in Gunnedah and surrounds to see what is available to them.

Councilโ€™s Manager Economy and Growth Susan Frater said invitations would be extended to high school students from across the region, particularly those in Year 10 and above, who are exploring future career options.

โ€œThe participation of our business community is what makes the expo such a valuable and inspiring event for young people, so weโ€™re asking businesses to get on board, share opportunities, and help shape the future of young people in our region,โ€ she said.

The Smithurst Theatre will be transformed into an agriculture focused zone, showcasing career pathways across farming, ag tech, livestock, machinery, and supply chain industries.

Ms Frater encouraged ag based businesses and organisations to register early for this yearโ€™s feature space.

โ€œThe Youth Expo helps to bridge the gap between employers and young job seekers, offering a centralised hub for networking and exploring careers,โ€ she said.

โ€œThis event empowers youth to explore and secure employment or training pathways through apprenticeships, traineeships or further education.โ€
Ms Frater said Council was also pleased to invite students from surrounding local government areas.

โ€œThere is such a strong connection across our region, and we are delighted to once again open the event to neighbouring communities,โ€ she said.

Recognising that businesses have different capacities, Council is offering a range of stallholder options for 2026, from full exhibition stands to setting up information tables for businesses unable to attend in person. Those interested in participating are encouraged to contact Council to discuss options.

Hi Gunnedah, your local NSW SES unit will be at the markets on Saturday 20 December. Come down and get information on being storm safe (especially at the moment with the storms that are about), flood safe and joining the Gunnedah SES family. We will have things for the children to do and we will be able to help you down load the *hazards near me* app if you donโ€™t already have it, or just say Gโ€™day to our dedicated volunteers.

The Bureau of Meteorology is advising that much of NSW is at risk of thunderstorm activity today, with some regions likely to experience severe storms.

Large hail, damaging winds, and intense rainfall are possible across the western ranges, slopes and plains, as well as parts of the northern and central coast. Some storm cells may produce heavy, slow-moving rainfall, leading to flash flooding, particularly across the Illawarra, Sydney Metropolitan Area, Hunter and southern Mid North Coast.

Please remember: If itโ€™s flooded, forget it.

Thunderstorms are already active in parts of Sydney, the Illawarra and the Alpine region, and storm activity may continue late into tonight and into early Saturday, with a possible redevelopment of storms in the far west as a cold front approaches. Conditions can change quickly, and storms may form with little notice, so please stay alert for updates. Weโ€™ll continue to share new information as it becomes available.

Weโ€™re encouraging everyone to take a few moments now to get storm ready
โ€ข Secure or pack away loose outdoor items
โ€ข Park vehicles away from trees where possible
โ€ข Clear gutters and drains
โ€ข Trim low or overhanging branches that could cause damage in strong winds

For life-threatening emergencies, call 000 immediately.
Stay safe, everyone. ๐ŸŒฉ๏ธโšก๏ธ

The Bureau of Meteorology is advising that our region may still see thunderstorms throughout this evening and into tomorrow, with some areas at risk of severe storm activity.
There is also the potential for intense rainfall from certain storm cells, which could lead to rapid river rises and flash flooding. Please remember: If itโ€™s flooded, forget it.
Weโ€™re encouraging everyone to take a few moments to get storm-ready. Secure or pack away loose items around your property, park vehicles away from trees where possible, clear gutters, and trim any low or overhanging branches that could cause damage in strong winds.
Storm activity may continue into tomorrow and possibly Saturday. Conditions can change quickly, and storms may form with little notice, so please keep an eye on updates, weโ€™ll share new information as soon as we have it.
If you need help from NSW SES, call 132 500. For life-threatening situations, dial 000 immediately.
Stay safe, everyone.

The NSW SES will be holding a community meeting on Tuesday the 28th of October from 2-6pm at the Gunnedah Town Hall.

We would love to hear from the community in particular around the August flooding events, if you are available, please drop in for a chat.

We will also have the "Big Map" set up for the event, for anyone who has never seen this before, the Big Map is a 15 x 12m map of the Namoi Catchment that you can walk on and explore your catchment - If you are planning on taking a walk on the map its socks only (NO SHOES).

Looking forward to seeing as many residents from the community as possible.

โš ๏ธSituation updateโš ๏ธ
We are mindful there have been multiple warnings go out to the community in regard to the predicted flooding in town and these have had varying times for the main peak to arrive in Gunnedah.

The reason for the delayed peak is there has been less rainfall recorded across the catchment over the last few days than first predicted and Keepit Dam has not been releasing as much water as the previous flooding event 2 weeks ago.

We understand that this can cause some confusion in the community, however we are working off the best available information from the Bureau of Meteorology and trying to get warnings out ASAP to keep the community informed.

We do appreciate all the support from the community and encourage you to stay up to date through Hazards Near Me.

Thanks everyone, please stay safe.
