Plans are underway to celebrate South Australia’s Week of Ageing Well in Whyalla from 1–7 October! 😊

Council is putting together a week of free activities for older residents, with plans including historic town tours, a coffee and cinema session, come-and-try activities and more.

Whyalla’s industrial heritage was celebrated at an opening event marking the completion of a new historical display dedicated to the BHP Whyalla Tramway. 🚆

Developed by the volunteer-run Whyalla Model Railway Association, the display was supported by almost $20,000 from the South Australian History Trust Fund and a generous donation from BHP. It preserves and shares the story of the tramway and the important role it played in Whyalla’s development.

The opening coincided with the 125th anniversary of the first loaded train transporting iron ore from Iron K**b to Hummock Hill (Whyalla) on 28 August 1901.

Community members and special guests came together to see the completed display and recognise the volunteers whose time, knowledge and dedication brought the project to life. 👏

Nominations are now open for the 2027 Citizen of the Year Awards, so now’s the time to nominate the people and groups who help make Whyalla a better place to live!

The awards are a chance to shine a light on local residents, volunteers and organisations whose efforts often go unnoticed, but have a lasting impact across the community.

Whyalla has a date to look forward to, with Christmas on the Avenue returning on Saturday, 21 November 2026 for an afternoon of community celebrations featuring the OneSteel Christmas Pageant and after-pageant market. 🎅

The Christmas on the Avenue working group has chosen the November date to encourage more local schools and the broader education sector to participate before the end-of-year calendar fills up.

OneSteel Christmas Pageant float applications are now open, with organisers encouraging schools, community groups, sporting clubs, businesses and other organisations to register to be part of the annual celebration. The Santos Community Christmas Carols will be held separately on Saturday, 12 December 2026.

Saturday, 21 November 2026: Christmas on the Avenue — featuring the OneSteel Christmas Pageant and after-pageant market.
Saturday, 12 December 2026: Santos Community Christmas Carols run by the Whyalla Show Society

A reminder that our first 'Common Ground' session is on next week, offering a chance for residents to have a casual chat with our CEO Justin Commons and find out about anything council-related.

Justin will set aside time every month for the sessions to find out what residents want to know more about; and how they'd like to see us improve our service to the community.

The session is on next Thursday 10 September from 11am-1pm at the library - Justin's looking forward to seeing you there!

Nearly every time you use a device, there’s a new scam trying to trick you into giving away your personal information or download a virus. Not everyone knows how to keep their details protected online, so the library is running a session to help you learn how to identify common scams and spot warning signs to help improve your digital literacy and stay safe online.

The session is on next Wednesday 9 September from 2-3pm at the library.

Be sure to update all details on dogs and cats online, such as:
- Have you moved house?
- Has your phone number changed?
- Has your pet been rehomed or passed away?
- Have you had your dog or cat microchipped or desexed?

Dog and cat registration renewal notices have been sent out, if you haven't received your notice yet, please contact us on (08) 8640 3444 ASAP. The last thing we want to do is issue expiations!
