Fires in the kitchen are the leading cause of house fires in NSW. The cause is almost always the same. Unattended cooking.

If you have to leave the kitchen, turn the stove off. A hot pan only needs a minute.

Cold dinner beats a house fire.

🚒 TRAINING | Confined Space Rescue

This week, the crew from Yass 511 headed down to Riverbank Park for something a little different!

Using the park’s play equipment, crews set up a simulated confined space rescue, creating a scenario similar to the challenges firefighters could face during a rescue from a grain silo or other confined-space environment.

The drill gave crews the opportunity to practice working in tight and difficult spaces, setting up rescue systems, managing access and egress, and safely recovering a casualty.

It might have looked like we were just playing at the park… but there was plenty of hard work going on! 😄

The crew put in a fantastic effort, worked really well together and, most importantly, had a great time doing it.

Training in different environments helps us build the skills, teamwork and problem-solving we need when the real call comes in.

Heaters need space. A lot of it.

Keep curtains, bedding, lounges, throws and drying racks at least one metre away.

Switch them off before you leave the room or go to bed. Never use outdoor heaters indoors.

Meet the crew from Gilgandra Station. They're coming 345km to get to Katoomba just to climb.

And they're already smashing their goal.

This year, the crew from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 300 Gilgandra is taking on Furber Steps in the Blue Mountains to continue a legacy that started when firefighters first climbed Sydney Tower Eye to raise awareness and funds for MND.

They've been training with their community to take on both individual and team challenges at this year's Firies Climb for MND. As they put it, the challenge is hard, but not as hard as MND, a progressive, terminal neurological disease that affects the nerve cells controlling the muscles that let us move, speak, breathe and swallow.

Every donation or share of their page helps fund the work being done at the Macquarie University Motor Neurone Disease Research Centre, a step toward a world without MND.

Charging on a bed, doona or pillow traps that heat against fabric. Lithium-ion fires can start fast.

Charge on a hard, flat surface. Keep batteries off bedding.

Today, the crew from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 511 Yass had the pleasure of attending the Yass High School Careers Day, chatting with students about the rewarding opportunities available in Fire and Rescue NSW.

A big thank you to Yass High School for having us. We hope we sparked a few future firefighters along the way!
