We are the LIFE Programme, the EU's instrument for protecting the environment & the climate. It was born on 21 May 1992.

The European Union's LIFE programme is the only EU programme fully dedicated to environmental and climate objectives. We have funded more than 6,000 projects to date.

Bats and birds aren't the scary part of Halloween. 🎃🦇 Losing the habitats they depend on is.

While bats and birds might be the stars of spooky Halloween stories, the real challenge is ensuring they have the places they need to roost, nest and thrive. 🌿

That's where the Bats & Birds comes in!

The project installs wildlife towers that provide potential roosting sites for bats in Luxembourg.

Because protecting biodiversity isn't about tricks or magic. It's about giving wildlife a future. 💚

How can we help cities and towns make the clean energy transition happen?

In Bulgaria, the FLAG-FICET is helping local authorities turn their plans into real projects through tailored financing and technical support.

🏘️ 14 municipalities supported
⚡ 45 clean energy projects implemented
💶 Over €70 million in total investments attracted

From making buildings more energy-efficient to developing solar power, electric public transport and geothermal energy, the project is helping build a cleaner future.

The expected impact? More than 54 GWh of energy saved and over 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided every year.

What if every effort to save water could make a difference - and be recognised? 💧

Through the Svolta Blu, a new voluntary “blue credits” system is being explored to encourage businesses and citizens to take action to save, restore and protect water resources.

By giving greater value to water conservation, the project aims to inspire more people to get involved and support more sustainable water management in the Vicenza area.

From residual biomass to valuable biochar - circular innovation in action! 🌱

What happens when woody residues from composting are transformed instead of being disposed of?
The BIOCHAR is showing how pyrolysis can turn this material into stable carbon and useful biochar products.

🏭 After 15 months, the demonstration plant in Austria has completed 9,348 operating hours, averaging more than 20 hours per day.

The plant is designed to make efficient use of resources:
♻️ Woody residues become valuable products for soils and other applications.
⚡ Surplus heat is reused for drying sewage sludge and biomass, as well as heating buildings.
💧 Nitrogen recovered from the drying process can be used to enrich biochar or supplied as fertiliser.
🌍 Biochar can support soil improvement and is also being explored for applications in construction and industry.

How do we help Europe’s ecosystems recover? are putting restoration into practice, from mountain peatlands to coastal habitats.

At SERE2026 in Brest, France, more than 650 participants from 52 countries came together to share knowledge, with over 30 LIFE projects represented.

The Po Delta is a unique natural landscape, but it faces growing challenges from climate change, including water shortages, land subsidence and saltwater intrusion that can threaten agriculture and ecosystems.

As part of the Climax PO, the Carovana del Po visited the Delta by boat to explore these challenges and discover solutions already in action or under development.

💧 Volta Vaccari: a natural basin that can store up to one million cubic metres of freshwater, helping secure water for irrigation when salt levels in the river are too high.
🌊 The Po di Pila: a planned salt barrier aims to help prevent seawater from moving upstream during periods of low river flow.
🏞️ Batteria Island: a place where the impacts of land subsidence and changing environmental conditions can be seen first-hand.

The visit brought together experts, public authorities, environmental organisations and local stakeholders to share knowledge and discuss how to make the Po River basin more resilient.

🌱 Because preparing for tomorrow’s climate starts with action today.
