💶🇪🇺 Today marks the start of trilogue negotiations on the – an important step towards adapting our common currency for the digital age. The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union will now work towards agreement on the legal framework, with the European Commission supporting the negotiations.

Why does Europe need a digital euro? As payments become increasingly digital, Europeans should have access to a secure and reliable EU payment option that works seamlessly across the entire euro area. Today, 13 euro area countries rely entirely on international card schemes for card payments. Excessive dependence on payment infrastructure controlled elsewhere creates vulnerabilities.

A digital euro would complement cash – not replace it – and give citizens and businesses greater choice. It will:
✅ provide an additional payment option across the euro area;
✅ offer a secure, inclusive and privacy-protecting payment method;
✅ work both online and offline;
✅ strengthen the resilience and strategic autonomy of Europe’s payment system; and
✅ support greater competition and innovation.

📌 A euro fit for the digital age has become a necessity, and we must now deliver it.
