Gelephu Higher Secondary School is a co-educational day school with classes from nine to twelve. The school, established in 2003, is located at Gelephu, a third major town in Bhutan, in the southern district of Sarpang. It is barely one kilometre from the main town with its picturesque ten or so acres campus adorned with pathways of golden hedges and gardens of multicoloured ever flowering bougainvillea. A visitor entering this school is taken to a new world of beauty and a temple of learning greeted by a vision-mission board with “ nurturing the whole child". The school presently has a student’s strength of seven hundred and eighty catered to by forty-two teachers and supported by sixteen other staff. The school has been working hard ever since the school began under the leadership of Ms Sangay Zam (presently Member of Parliament) which includes setting up the system, developing the landscape and emerging as the germinating seed to get the attention of the world around. A whole Bhutan second in class twelve board exam came as a reward in 2008, whole Bhutan Commerce stream topper in 2009 and a whole Bhutan class ten topper in 2010 securing an all-time high average of 94.6%. Also, the school ranked 2nd and 3rd in class twelve and class ten respectively amongst all the schools in performance evaluated based on indicators encompassing a wide range of areas. In 2012 the school produced a whole Bhutan second in science stream. 2014 has seen the Arts stream being introduced.

Gelephu Higher Secondary School celebrated the birthday of His Holiness the Je Khenpo with prayers and religious offerings. Students and staff participated with devotion, expressing their gratitude and respect for His Holiness.

The celebration also provided an opportunity for students to appreciate Bhutan’s spiritual heritage and values of compassion, mindfulness, and moral conduct. The programme concluded with prayers for His Holiness’s good health, long life, and continued guidance.

Appreciation to Our Waste Warrior Club

Gelephu Higher Secondary School extends heartfelt appreciation to our Waste Warrior Club, coordinated by Mrs. Dechen Choden and her dedicated team, for their enthusiastic participation in the Waste Segregation Competition held among schools across Bhutan to mark World Environment Day 2026.

Their commitment to responsible waste segregation resulted in Nu. 11,880 earned from recyclable waste, truly demonstrating the spirit of “Turning Waste into Rewards.” Although the school withdrew from the subsequent competition in the capital, this achievement remains a proud reflection of our students’ environmental commitment.

We also sincerely acknowledge Kuensel, in partnership with Ugyen Trading Pvt. Ltd. and ucyKAL, for organizing this meaningful initiative and encouraging schools to take practical action for a cleaner and greener Bhutan.

Trashi Delek, Yeshi!

Yeshi Gyeltshen, a class IX student participated in a 21-day Leadership Training at the National Scouts Centre, Paro, during the summer break. The programme helped him develop key leadership skills such as teamwork, communication, discipline, responsibility, and self-confidence through various activities and group tasks.

His active participation shows his commitment to personal growth and Scouting values. It was known that the training was a valuable experience that strengthened his leadership abilities and that it will help him contribute better to his Scout group and school community.

Gelephu Higher Secondary School successfully conducted its 2nd Parent–Teacher Meeting today, with an overwhelming turnout of parents. Your enthusiastic participation reflects the strong partnership between home and school in supporting every child's learning journey.
