Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary - Belize Study Abroad

Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary - Belize Study Abroad Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is an NGO that offers experiential learning, field-based research, sustainable tourism, and environmental education programs.

The organization also manages over 3,000 acres of protected land in the Maya Forest Corridor. Our goal is to guide our guests and students in experiencing the natural wonders of the tropics and life in a developing country, recognizing the diversity of human potential through other cultures. We do this from a peaceful natural setting within a 1070-acre private protected area at our Monkey Bay campus where we experiment with sustainable living technologies and conservation land management.

Blink and you'll miss it! The American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) is the smallest kingfisher found in Belize. It can be spotted near quiet streams and wetlands. We're lucky enough to host a couple in our own backyard pond!

Despite the size, these little hunters are incredibly skilled at catching small fish and aquatic invertebrates with lightning fast dives.

Keep an eye out for its rich green plumage and rusty belly on your next stroll along the waterside🧢🌿

Help us protect and care for a place where conservation, education, and hospitality come together.

Conservation is more than just protecting plants, animals, and wild areas. It's also about people and local communities. Today, when a large fire threatened the town of Mahogany Heights, teams from the Savanna Field Station, WCS Belize, Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary - Belize Study Abroad, and Foundation for Wildlife Conservation all dropped what they were doing, grabbed their gear, and ran out to assist community members in fighting the fire. It was a hot, brutal day for firefighting, but thanks to this joint effort, the fire was extinguished before it got to anyone's home. This sort of teamwork, working with local communities, is a critical part of conservation. Thanks everyone who came out to help!

This Endangered Species Day, we're highlighting the Belize Yellow-Headed Amazon. This subspecies is specialized to survive and nest in Belize's pine savannas. While they're at risk for poaching, they're also at risk of losing critical nesting habitat. Learn more about how we help to conserve this species, and share!

A big thank you to Frank’s Eddy Government School for inviting us to be part of your Career Fair last week!

The career day was a wonderful way to inspire young minds by showing students the many different paths they can take in life. At the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary booth, students explored the exciting world of conservation. They learned about our role as a protected area in Belize, discovered how camera traps help us monitor wildlife, and identified some of the amazing species commonly captured on our cameras.

We were thrilled to share our work and hope we inspired a few future conservationists!

Over the past two days, Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic facilitated the Wildlife Ambassador Program Training at our campus. The workshop brought together our Protected Areas Department, representatives from The Belize Zoo, FWC Runaway Creek, Ladyville Police Station, students, and conservationists to learn more about the Wildlife Protection Act, illegal wildlife trade and when or how to identify wildlife that need assistance.

Thankyou to BWRC for including us in the national WAP trainings, as we’re now proud certified Wildlife Ambassadors!

Quit monkeying around, this is serious!

The Yucatan Spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis) is one of two species of monkeys native to Belize. Spider monkeys are ultra-agile, with their strong tail acting as a "fifth limb" helping them grip and swing effortlessly through the canopy.

While they dwell in large troops at night, spider monkeys are usually seen in smaller groups during the day while foraging for food. This curious pair came up close to us as we were exiting one of the caves in the national park and stayed for a fun little photo shoot.

Did you know that Monkey Bay gets its name from the groups of howler and spider monkeys that used to hang around the river bend? We're always excited to see more of our primate friends coming back to the area after being noticeably absent for a while.
