β€œBill 28 creates new barriers to access, moves decision making from local boards and trained professionals, and raises privacy concerns.”

Coalition of Alberta Public Libraries (CAP Libraries) has sent a letter to Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams to outline concerns with the breadth and practicality of the proposed legislation and to request a meeting.

The changes announced by the Government of Alberta impact 324 public library service points across the province, which serve 99% of Albertans.

Concerns with Bill 28 relate to its potential impact on:
β€’ Albertans privacy (public libraries have a long-standing commitment to protecting what individuals read and borrow)
β€’ Intellectual freedom
β€’ Free speech and expression
β€’ Local decision-making (ensuring community needs continue to shape library services)
β€’ Equitable access to materials for all Albertans
