The City of Edmonton just got word they unfortunately have two more positive Dutch Elm Disease (DED) trees. This makes it 16 trees for the city since it was discovered in 2024.

These trees had fairly early symptoms of yellow flagging on one branch. No sign of beetles was found in these trees, but there are Siberian elms near both that have shown signs of BEBB activity. These Siberians will also be removed to help decrease beetle habitat.

Removals was occur in coordination with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Government of Alberta. Ground surveillance and extensive additional testing in the area was done immediately. All elm wood was disposed of at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre, following strict, specialized handling procedures.

Dutch elm disease is a contagious fungal infection that spreads easily to nearby elms. The disease poses a significant threat to Edmonton's urban forest, where elm trees make up 22 per cent of the City’s Open Space and Boulevard Tree Inventory, or approximately 90,000 in total.

This season Society to Prevent Elm Disease (STOPDED) has contracted Living Tree Environmental Ltd. to conduct a cost share comprehensive DED survey in Redwater, Devon, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc and Morinville. In 2025 a survey was done in St. Albert, Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Beaumont, and Sherwood Park. Early detection is the key to control DED and allows for quick and decisive action by municipalities, counties and MDs to help control and prevent the spread.
