Sometimes, a small bear can make a very big difference.

Hanover Fire & Rescue would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to DKI Hi-Tech Hanover for their incredibly generous donation of a box of teddy bears to our department.

These bears are much more than a stuffed animal. When we respond to a motor vehicle collision, rescue, or any emergency where a child may be frightened, upset, or overwhelmed, we can place a bear in their arms.

While our firefighters are working to manage the emergency and complete the rescue, that little bear can provide a sense of comfort, security, and something for a child to hold onto when everything around them feels unfamiliar and scary.

For us, helping people isn't just about the rescue itself. It's about taking care of the people involved, especially our youngest and most vulnerable.

Thank you, DKI Hi-Tech, for helping us be there for children when they need a little extra comfort. Your generosity will allow our firefighters to provide reassurance and a small moment of comfort during what may be a very difficult experience.

🚒 Thank you, Hanover! ❤️ FPW 2026

What a night. We figure close to 600 people came through the station for our Fire Prevention Week Open House, and it was great to see so many families, neighbours and friends stop by.

Kids climbed into trucks, people toured the station, checked out the rescue gear, drones and boats, watched demos and grabbed something off the BBQ. Mostly, it was a chance for us to meet the people we serve, and we really enjoyed it.

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower." Lithium-ion batteries are in almost everything now, from phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools. Use the charger that came with your device, don't charge on beds or couches, unplug once it's full, and stop using any battery that's swollen, hot or smells funny.

To our members: thank you. A lot of you spent the day setting up, cleaning, cooking and still answering calls, then came back that evening after a full day at your regular jobs. That's what makes this department what it is.

NEWS: Residents calling 9-1-1 for a medical emergency will see changes beginning October 14 as the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) is implemented for the County of Grey region. The London Central Ambulance Communications Centre dispatches ambulances serving Grey County and is implementing the new system as part of the Ontario Ministry of Health's plan to modernize medical dispatch.

MPDS is an internationally recognized dispatching system that uses structured, evidence-based questions to assess the urgency of medical emergencies and determine the most appropriate response. The system will help ensure patients with life-threatening emergencies receive the fastest care possible.

Under the new system, callers may be asked more questions than they would have been under the previous dispatch model. These questions help dispatchers understand the patient’s condition and the details help provide paramedics with important information before they arrive.

As call volumes continue to increase in Grey County, will help prioritize ambulance response based on the severity of the medical emergency. Paramedics will continue responding and providing care for calls they are dispatched to, but response priority will be determined based on clinical urgency. The system will help to ensure ambulances are available for patients who need them most while maintaining emergency coverage through Grey County communities.

Grey County responded to more than 17,000 calls for service in 2025, the highest annual call volume in the history of the service. Effective deployment and prioritization have become increasingly important as call volumes continue growing.

“Grey County paramedics are committed to providing high-quality care to every patient we serve, while helping ensure ambulance resources are available when and where they are needed most,” said Grey County Paramedics Operations Manager, Jessica Robb. “Answering additional questions will not delay response. Instead, it helps ensure resources are deployed appropriately based on each patient’s needs.”

The implementation of MPDS doesn’t change when residents should call 9-1-1. Anyone experiencing or witnessing a medical emergency should continue calling 9-1-1 immediately.

It is illegal to fly your drone over or near first responders when they are on the scene of an emergency operation.

If you see flashing lights, emergency vehicles, or active disaster response, keep your drone grounded.

A drone can interfere with their important work and create additional hazards that could force emergency operations to stop their efforts.
