Emily recommends Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore: “A delightful take on time travel for fans of Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library or Emma Straub’s This Time Tomorrow.
On her 19th birthday, Oona wakes up in her 51-year-old life, with no memory of the years lived in between. And so it continues that every year Oona jumps to another age and time, living out of order. What has stuck with me most is the warmth of the narrative and the comforting reminder that it is never too late to reinvent or re-prioritize. A beautiful look at the preciousness of time."

Mark your calendars! The Perth & Distric Library’s annual Summer Fiction Book Sale will be held Saturday, July 11 in the library garden. The sale starts at 9 am. All sales are by donation.
Donations of gently used adult, young adult, and children's fiction, published after 2016, may be brought to the library between June 27th and July 10th.

Laurie recommends ‘This is Your Mind on Plants' by Michael Pollan: “I love reading Michael Pollan, but better yet - I love LISTENING to Michael Pollan! This book is available in print or on Libby. This time round, Pollan dives deep into three plant drugs — o***m, caffeine, and mescaline. He examines and experiences these plants from several very different angles and contexts, and shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively — as a drug, whether licit or illicit. I enjoy how accessible the information is and his down to earth way of passing it on.”

The Library After Dark fundraising concert series returns Saturday, July 18, to the Perth & District Library with a concert featuring Suzie Vinnick!

This summer event, offered in partnership with Stewart Park Festival, offers a chance for people who love music to see top notch artists in a unique, alternative space and support the Perth & District Library.

A Saskatoon native transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, Roots and Blues singer and musician Suzie Vinnick is a 3X Juno Nominee, a 2X Canadian Folk Music Award winner, won a 2024 ECMA with her project A’Court, Spiegel and Vinnick and is a 12-time winner of the Maple Blues Award for songwriting, female vocalist, acoustic act and more. Suzie has a voice you’ve heard a thousand times and one you’ll never forget. It soars, it growls, it whispers and it shouts from a deep, deep well of emotion. The pure joy she exudes when she plays her guitars is so worth the show.

Doors open at 8:30 pm and music starts at 9:00 pm. There will be a cash bar, featuring a selection of wine and beer generously donated by the Perth Brewery.

Tickets are $30 and available for purchase online in advance at www.perthunionlibrary.ca/library-after-dark or at the door. A charitable receipt for $15 will be issued for each ticket.

At the height of the Great Depression, 2,000 young, single and unemployed men decided to ride boxcars from Vancouver to Ottawa to seek work and wages from Prime Minister "Iron Heel" R.B. Bennett. Their perilous journey became the On-To-Ottawa Trek.
Join historian and author Michael Dupuis as he presents the story of the men and the Trek through his latest book The Incognito Reporter and the On-To-Ottawa Trek.

Join in at the next Perth OPEN MIC - Thursday, June 18, 7-9 pm. Come out for local stories, performances, and poetry! Donations are welcome at the door.
Do you have a piece that's a work in progress? A polished story or poem? All work* is welcome. If you are interested in participating, there will be 5-minute slots available. Priority will be given in the order of those that sign up upon arrival - limited spaces available.
If you are not a writer or not ready to read a piece aloud we warmly welcome listeners, too. Bring your friends and lend an ear.
* Ensure stories do not include anything that is racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or graphically violent.
The 2026 Open Mic events are presented with funding support by the Community Impact fund of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills.
