A New Approach to Wildfire Risk and Insurance Symposium

On October 29, CJS Industrial (https://www.linkedin.com/company/cjs-industrial/) is bringing together insurers, municipalities, community leaders and wildfire professionals for a one-day symposium focused on a critical discussion:

How do we move from reacting to wildfire to reducing risk before the smoke is in the air?

Due to strong interest from those wanting to attend virtually, this event has been moved to a virtual format to make it more accessible to participants across communities and industries across Canada.

The day will include conversations around wildfire mitigation, community resilience and insurance, along with a LIVE demonstration of RUFUS, our proactive wildfire mitigation system. From Reaction to Prevention: Rethinking Wildfire Risk

Wildfire season may be winding down across Alberta, but wildfire preparedness shouldn’t.

Now is the time to plan for what comes next.

On October 29, CJS Industrial is bringing together insurers, municipalities, community leaders and wildfire professionals in Stony Plain, Alberta, for a one-day symposium focused on a critical question: How do we move from reacting to wildfire to reducing risk before the smoke is in the air?

Fire season has finally slowed down.

First, a sincere thank you to the firefighters, emergency personnel, volunteers and everyone who stood on the front lines protecting our communities this season. The work you do is incredible, and you deserve our respect and gratitude.

But now I want to speak directly to our leaders.

To the people making decisions at the municipal, provincial and federal levels: the time to prepare for next fire season is now.

Not next spring.

Not when the forecasts start getting concerning.

Not when communities are already being evacuated.

Now.

Wildfire response is changing, and fire departments are being asked to do more with stretched resources.

That’s where RUFUS from CJS Industrial can play an important supporting role. RUFUS is designed to help protect homes, businesses, municipal assets, and critical infrastructure by creating a protective humidity bubble around at-risk areas. With independent power, onboard water storage, 360-degree surveillance, and remote activation, it gives property owners and emergency teams another tool when every minute matters.

This is not about replacing firefighters. It is about helping support them.
When communities are under threat, systems like RUFUS can help reduce pressure on local fire departments, protect key assets, and give evacuees more confidence that their property has a layer of defence in place.

Wildfire protection cannot wait until the fire is already at the property. That is the problem RUFUS was built to solve.
RUFUS is a pre-positioned wildfire suppression system designed to help protect high-risk properties, communities, and critical infrastructure before response crews arrive. With water already on site, independent power and communications, remote operation, surveillance, and a deployable suppression arm, RUFUS adds a proactive layer of defence when time, access, and distance matter most.

If evacuation happens, protection does not have to stop. RUFUS can be operated remotely, helping support firefighters while keeping people safely away from the hazard.

For communities, insurers, and infrastructure owners, the conversation needs to shift from reaction to prevention, from rebuilding after loss to reducing exposure before impact, and from waiting for the fire to arrive to having protection already in place.

Because wildfire risk is changing, protection must be ready before the fire arrives.

For over eighteen months, CJS Industrial has been in conversation with communities, municipalities, fire services, and homeowners across Canada about wildfire risk.

Before anything else, our hearts go out to everyone who has lost property, homes, or a sense of safety this year. The scale of loss across the country has been devastating, and we don’t take that lightly.

One thing has become clear through all these conversations: everyone agrees that being proactive is the right approach. Scroll through LinkedIn on any given week and you’ll see the same sentiment echoed by leaders, agencies, and residents alike. We’re collectively aligned on the philosophy and that’s a genuinely encouraging starting point.

Now comes the harder part: turning that shared belief into action on the ground.

We know the people making these decisions are doing so under real constraints tight budgets, competing priorities, complex jurisdictions. We’re not looking to point fingers. We just believe that with the tools available today, there’s a real opportunity to close the gap between what everyone agrees needs to happen and what’s actually being funded and deployed.

At CJS Industrial, we’ll keep showing up with solutions and advocating for a more proactive approach to protecting communities before the next fire starts.

This partnership with One Earth Communications will help us to tell the story of RUFUS , our autonomous wildfire suppression system built to protect communities, critical infrastructure, and the people who call rural and urban Canada home.
Building RUFUS has been a two-year journey of R&D, prototyping, and countless conversations with First Nations, insurers, and municipalities who all share the same goal: stop wildfires before they become disasters. Now it's time to share that story more widely and Jaclyn's expertise in communications will help us do exactly that.
