Ferguslea Properties wants to tear down 1,000 family townhomes in Accora Village 🚨 That’s 5X bigger than the Herongate demovictions that made international news in 2018. City Hall could protect tenants, but isn't. 👇
For over a decade, Ottawa ACORN has called on to pass a rental replacement bylaw that would ensure demolished affordable homes are replaced in the new development, and that impacted tenants are provided temporary housing until construction is complete and they can return to their homes at the same rent 🏠🔑
This isn't new. Half a dozen Ontario municipalities already have these protections in place. Now 's inaction puts thousands of low-income and working class families at risk of mass displacement while destroying much needed affordable, family rentals ⚠️
We need federal leadership when cities refuse to act! 📢
Earlier this year the Carney government announced federal funding to build 1,100 new rental homes in Ottawa... roughly the size of what will be demolished in Accora Village 👎
Canada's approach to housing is backwards if our strategy is to incentive the construction of new housing on one hand, while allowing corporate landlords to destroy what already exists on the other 📉
So what's the solution? 🤔 We need national housing standards that set a baseline of tenant protections - CANADA WIDE!
That means if cities, provinces and territories want federal money, they'll need to strengthen their policies protecting renters ie. no more 💰💰 for enabling the destruction of our homes! ✊🔥
Tell Mark Carney we need his government to stand up for renters!
