We spend a lot of time checking in on others, but not always enough time checking in on ourselves.

June is Men's Mental Health Month, and it's an opportunity to help break the stigma around talking about our struggles.

This message isn't just for first responders. It's for every man struggling in silence.

Check in on each other. Listen to each other. Talk to each other.

If you or someone you know needs support in BC:

📞 WorkSafeBC Crisis Support Line: 1-800-624-2928
(You do not need a WorkSafeBC claim to call.)

📞 310 Mental Health Support: 310-6789

📞 Su***de Crisis Helpline: Call or text 988
or visit 988.ca

The strongest men aren't the ones who carry everything alone—they're the ones who know when to share the weight.

The “Fireman's Wiggle”

If you've ever seen a firefighter standing still and suddenly doing a little wiggle, you may have wondered what was going on.

Our SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) includes a PASS (Personal Alert Safety System) device. This safety feature monitors for movement and is designed to sound an alarm if a firefighter becomes motionless for an extended period of time. A lack of movement could indicate that a firefighter is injured, trapped, unconscious, or otherwise in need of assistance.

When we're operating but remaining stationary, the PASS device can begin its countdown toward an alarm.

A quick shift, shake, or wiggle lets the device know we're still moving and resets the timer.

So that little dance you see? It's actually a small part of a much larger firefighter safety system.

⚠️ We are aware of a wildfire in West Kelowna near Kalamoir Regional Park. Crews are responding and the Emergency Operations Centre is activated to support the site. More information to come. Visit https://www.coemergency.ca/subscribe to register for emergency notifications. .

We joined the “work clothes vs. weekend clothes” trend, but for Paid-On-Call firefighters, the difference is small: different gear, same commitment.

Paid-On-Call firefighters live normal lives—working jobs, raising families, and enjoying weekends—while remaining professionally trained and ready to respond whenever our community needs us, no matter the day or time.

On Tuesday nights over the next few weeks, you may notice our members training throughout the community as they strengthen their wildfire response skills.

We welcome your support and curiosity, but please remember to give crews and equipment plenty of space so training can be conducted safely and effectively.

Thank you!

Every firefighter watching this knows what staging does to a person. 😅

For those outside the fire service: Staging is a designated area where crews wait until they’re assigned a task. It helps keep emergency scenes organized, safe, and efficient.

Share with your crew members who have mastered the art of professional waiting. 🤙

🚨Lights flashing? Sirens sounding?🚨

When emergency vehicles are responding, every second counts. Pull over to the right when safe, stop, and give first responders the space they need to get where they’re going. If you can’t move to the right, stop and stay where you are.

Your quick action could help save a life.

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Grady Brewer on his promotion to Captain.

Following the retirement of a longtime Captain from NWFR Station 102, Captain Brewer will be stepping into this role that carries significant responsibility and leadership within our department.

This promotion reflects years of hard work, dedication, professionalism, and a commitment to serving both his fellow firefighters and our community.

The rank of Captain requires strong leadership, sound decision-making, mentorship, and accountability. Through his service as a Lieutenant, Brewer has consistently demonstrated these qualities and has earned the trust and respect of those around him. This promotion is a testament to the effort he has invested throughout his career and is well deserved.

We are confident Captain Brewer will continue the tradition of excellence established at Station 102 and look forward to seeing him succeed in this new role.

Congratulations, Captain Brewer, on this well-earned promotion.

We are pleased to announce that Connor Yih has officially earned his Black Helmet and has been promoted to Exterior Firefighter.

Connor began his journey with our department as a junior member and has dedicated the past five years to training, learning, and serving our community. Through a school program, he was awarded a scholarship to attend a firefighting program, where he received extensive training in both structural firefighting and wildfire protection.

Since joining the department, Connor has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, commitment to training, and passion for the fire service. Earning a Black Helmet is an important milestone that reflects the hard work and dedication he has put into his firefighting career.

Please join us in congratulating Connor on this well-deserved achievement. We are proud to have him as part of our team and look forward to seeing his continued growth within the department.
