Winnipeg! Join us on Sunday July 26th for our annual potluck in celebration of Moncada Day, from 5:00-9:00pm at St. Vital Park in the Aspen-Oak Shelter. There will be live music, a brief presentation on this key event in Cuban history, and plenty of food! Free to all, but donations are welcome.

Tonight at the Ukrainian Labour Temple (591 Pritchard Avenue)—listen to Dr. Isaac Saney of Dalhousie University on the urgent situation facing the Cuban people and Trump’s current offensive against Cuba. The event is free and begins at 7pm, as part of May Works Festival of Labour and the Arts.

ANTI- IMPERIAL SOLIDARITIES AND
CANADIAN COMPLICITY: FROM THE CARIBBEAN TO IRAN

March 30th at 6pm at WestEnd Commons (641 St Matthew’s Ave; side door)

Featuring Tamanisha John, Brendan Devlin, Owen Schalk, Kerry Sinanan, and facilitated by Aarzoo Singh.

Early 2026 has seen a marked escalation in US-Western backed actions with global repercussions. The US bombings of Caribbean citizens at sea, military installations in Trinidad, the kidnapping of Venezuela’s President Maduro, the increased drone attacks in Haiti, and the blockade of fuel to Cuba following decades of fatal sanctions, place the entire Caribbean region in extreme precarity. These events are linked to the ongoing genocide in Palestine, the UAE-backed genocide in Sudan, the crises in the Democratic Republic of Congo where child enslavement underpins global tech-economies, and, most recently, the illegal US-Israeli bombings of Iran and Lebanon. This roundtable makes connections across hemispheres by naming Canada’s own complicity in these Western imperial actions, from arms trading to extensive mining interests, and considers what committed anti-imperial solidarity in Canada should look like at this time.

Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee honours the memory of the legendary musician and revolutionary Jorge Gómez Barranco, who passed on March 23rd in Havana, Cuba. A key figure in the Nueva Trova movement, Gómez was the founder and director of the legendary Grupo Moncada in 1972. He served in the National Assembly of Popular Power for four terms and was a member of the Union of Artists and Writers of Cuba.

Grupo Moncada has a special relationship to Manitoba and to Canada, having represented Cuba with a performance at the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg. This pivotal cultural exchange began a deep friendship between our committee members and the group, especially Jorge Gómez, whose music and steadfast inspiration lives in our hearts.

Join the Penner-Bethune Club, the YCL, and Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee at the Winnipeg Chilean Association (892 Burrows Ave) for a celebration of International Working Women’s Day and the Cuban Revolution!

This Sunday, March 8th, at 4:00pm, we will present two films by legendary Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómez—Local power, Popular power, and My Contribution, depicting the changing role of women in revolutionary Cuba and commissioned by the Federation of Cuban Women.

Before the screening, please attend the Chilean Association’s special commemoration of International Women’s Day, beginning at 1:00pm and featuring speeches, greetings, and music by Chile Lucha y Canta and others.

WHAT NEXT? Livestream the People’s Tribunal tomorrow at 1:30pm Winnipeg time via the Canadian Network on Cuba Facebook; sign and share the parliamentary petition to unblock Cuba and oppose US aggression (now at over 10,000 signatures!); donate to the CNC’s monthly containers of aid to Cuba!

Now is the time to grow the solidarity movement!

Diane Zack, coordinator of Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee, speaking against the proposed anti-protest bylaw at City Hall today.

“For several years now, MB-Cuba Solidarity has carried out peaceful protests at the corner of River and Osborne on the last Sunday of every month against the US blockade of Cuba, carrying signs like ‘Let Cuba Live!’ and ‘Trump: Hands off Canada Means Hands Off Cuba!’ We have been well-received at this corner. There’s been no violence of any kind. Cars driving by show their support for our message by honking their horns. However, we are about one hundred metres from a church, and there’s a senior’s residence across from the church, so our usual corner would be off-limits if this bylaw is passed …”

“For the past couple of years, the Palestinian community and its supporters organized weekly rallies opposing the Israeli bombing of Gaza. Yes, the rallies were loud. Many passersby and motorists showed support by waving and honking, but there were some who objected … The Palestinians and their supporters did not overreact to these attempts to intimidate them. There are some organizations in Winnipeg, and some politicians, who support the Israeli war on Gaza and its population, and these same organizations have called for this bylaw. They want a bylaw to keep Palestinians and their supporters off the streets of Winnipeg. In my opinion, this is the impetus for the proposed bylaw. But the opposition to the bylaw has grown exponentially … For my organization, Manitoba-Cuba Solidarity Committee, it’s an extremely important time to take a stand in public rallies against the US attempts to destroy Cuba. We want to step up our work, not have it curtailed.”

Emergency Rally for Venezuela

On Sunday, January 4, 2026, members of Peace Alliance Winnipeg and allies will gather in Winnipeg at River and Osborne, 2:30pm for an emergency demonstration to stand with the people of Venezuela. Please bring flags and signs with messages like “Hands Off Venezuela” and “End US Imperialism,” etc. Please join us and share this message far and wide.

On January 1st, 1959—67 years ago today—the regime of Fulgencio Batista fell to the revolutionary forces of the July 26th Movement. Happy new year, and may 2026 be a year of global struggle in solidarity with the Cuban people and their revolution!
