Happy Entrepreneur Day – Hyvää Yrittäjän Päivää! 🌟

One of the most exciting things we get to witness at VTT is the transformation of researchers into entrepreneurs.

This year, five new startups have taken that leap:

🌿 Elea & Lili: microplastic-free absorbent materials for hygiene and agriculture
🧬 Proteins.1: ultra-sensitive protein detection for earlier disease diagnostics
♻️ Reduciner: turning captured CO₂ into valuable resources
🔋 Granarium Technologies: renewable supercapacitors for energy systems
🧊 S-Transistors: superconducting transistors for scalable quantum computing

Today, we celebrate the researchers who turned years of scientific expertise into startups with the potential to transform industries and create entirely new ones.

Through our science-based incubator VTT LaunchPad, we're working to turn even more research into the next generation of deep tech growth companies: https://hubs.ly/Q04wGZrh0

When your commute is a 10-minute walk through Otaniemi, it’s hard not to be an optimist 🌻

Eetu spends his days as a Research Trainee mapping out preliminary diagrams for a new hydrogen test station. Between safety analysis meetings and the sacred Wednesday tradition of lunch at Täffä (plus surprise afternoon cinnamon buns), he keeps our hydrogen tech moving forward.

He wraps up the day scaling walls with the VTT climbing club 🧗

Any mid-week traditions keeping your team energized?

Lotta Partanen sees something most of us don't: the beginnings of industries that don't exist yet 🚀

Leading our science-based incubator VTT LaunchPad, Lotta works with teams taking breakthrough technologies out of the lab and into the world.

💬 "I really, truly believe that we can renew industries one company at a time," Lotta says.

📈 Creating startups is one of the ways we at VTT turn research into growth. From quantum computing and semiconductors to sustainable food and low-carbon materials, many of Finland's leading deep tech startups were born at VTT.

Companies from around the world come to Jyväskylä to test the next generation of packaging, hygiene products and construction materials 🧪🧻

📦 We've built a globally unique piloting environment where forest industry companies can develop and test new production methods before investing in full-scale production, while bringing together chemical suppliers and technology partners to accelerate innovation.

🫧 The latest addition is the VTT AirLaid pilot line, launched in spring 2026. It can reduce water use by around 90% and significantly cut energy consumption compared to traditional fibre product manufacturing.

🚀 The piloting environment has also helped launch companies such as Spinnova, Paptic, Aisti and Fiberwood.

"Even as far away as in South America, the forest industry knows what we are capable of here in Central Finland," says Harri Kiiskinen, Principal Scientist at VTT.

The global forest industry is increasingly turning its attention to Finland, and Jyväskylä in particular. There, VTT has built substantial infrastructure for piloting and pre-commercial production of raw-material-efficient fibre products using water, foam, and airlaying. Whether developing new inn...

We’re excited to introduce S-transistors, a new VTT startup developing the missing hardware for scaling quantum computers! 📣

⚡ S-Transistors is commercialising superconducting transistors for controlling quantum computers with less wiring and energy.

🚀 The Finnish startup has now raised €2.6 million to develop product prototypes, establish a pilot manufacturing line and grow its team.

“Superconducting transistors are exactly that missing piece of hardware for large-scale, energy-efficient quantum computing,” says Dr. Heorhii Bohuslavskyi, Co-founder and CEO of S-Transistors.

🧊 The long-term vision is a quantum motherboard capable of controlling the hundreds of thousands of qubits that commercially useful quantum computers may require in the future.

The new Finnish startup is disrupting the ways of controlling large-scale quantum computers by delivering a completely new class of electronic devices – superconducting transistors. These novel devices combine the computational power of transistors with the ultra-low power dissipation of supercond...

Ever wondered what a day in a cleanroom actually looks like? 🧑🏻‍🔬

As a Process Engineer Trainee, Jonathan spends his days testing thin films and analysing samples under electron microscopes to keep our tools performing at their best.

And after a day full of lab work and data fine-tuning, he swaps the cleanroom suit for a quick metro ride to Helsinki for an evening sail on the water. ⛵️

Turning emissions into stone isn't magic – it could become an important carbon storage solution for Finland 🪨👏

The idea is based on a natural process in which CO₂ reacts with certain minerals and becomes permanently locked into stone, explains VTT’s Senior Scientist Sampo Mäkikouri.

➡️ In nature, that process takes thousands of years. Technology can speed it up to hours.

➡️ VTT startup Carbonaide has already commercialised a method that stores carbon dioxide in concrete.

➡️ According to Sampo, the biggest opportunities for Finland lie in connecting industrial side streams and mining residues with nearby CO₂ sources.

What would it take to turn carbon dioxide into a new source of jobs, business and technology exports? Read Sampo Mäkikouri's blog: https://hubs.ly/Q04vv0LN0
