Highlights from the Erasmus+ LESE Project’s Working Meeting in Alessandria Italy 2 – 3 March 2026.
On March 2 and 3, UISP Alessandria hosted one of the stages of the Erasmus+ LESE – Learning and Participation through Socially Engaged Theater project, an initiative that aims to promote the learning, inclusion, and social reintegration of people with criminal backgrounds through community theater.
Two intense and inspiring days in Alessandria brought together all partners for the second phase of the LESE project.
📍 2nd of March 2026
The working meeting in Alessandria began at the Fuga di Sapori bistro inside the Cantiello e Gaeta prison followed by a welcome breakfast and the introduction of the international delegations.
Presentation of the Italian internship program and the drama therapy experience in the local Alessandria's prisons, led by drama therapist Fabio Martinello and representatives of partner associations.
The day concluded with a dinner prepared by the Idee in Fuga cooperative, a social enterprise that operates inside the Cantiello e Gaeta prison and offers people in detention the opportunity to develop professional skills through culinary training and work experience. Their dishes added a meaningful touch to the evening, reflecting the cooperative’s commitment to inclusion and reintegration.
📍 3rd of March 2026
Participants visited the Borsalino Museum, discovering one of Alessandria’s cultural landmarks.
At Ristorazione Sociale, the meeting shifted into its most productive and forward‑looking phase where partners engaged in an in‑depth collaborative discussion dedicated to shaping the project’s next steps — with a strong emphasis on the creation of the manual on the application of community theater models. Drawing on the experiences gathered in Helsinki and Alessandria, the group worked collectively to outline the structure, key themes, and practical guidelines that will form the backbone of this publication. Once completed, the manual will serve as a shared resource for professionals, stakeholders, policymakers, and the wider public, ensuring that the methodologies developed throughout the project can be adopted, adapted, and sustained across different contexts.
🎤 Throughout the two days, interviews were recorded with project representatives, including Kimmo Kumlander, Maurizio Arduino, Fabio Martinello, and Lucia Veleva, offering insights into each country’s contribution and the next steps ahead.

🎨 Art Therapy Behind the Walls

When colors turn into thoughts,
and thoughts into desires…
freedom is born.

Even where freedom is limited,
there is a place that remains untouched — the inner world.

The brush in your hand and the thoughts in your mind
have no walls, no bars, no time.
They create a space where a person can breathe,
express, and simply be.

Art is not just an activity —
it is a path back to yourself.
A way to speak what cannot be said,
to release the weight within,
to give shape to hope.

Because even when everything seems taken away,
no one can take
what you create from within.

✨ Sometimes freedom begins with a single color.
✨ With one movement of the brush.
✨ With the courage to feel.

Interestingly, behind most crimes lie unresolved trauma, a lack of a safe environment, violence, or emotional abandonment in early childhood.

👉 Punishment without psychological work rarely leads to real change.
👉 Understanding, therapy, and rehabilitation offer a chance for true reintegration into society.

🎉 A Decade of Porttiteatteri Celebrated! 🎉
Yesterday, the ten-year journey of the LESE project's coordinator Porttiteatteri reached a sparkling milestone with the jubilee seminar “EMPATHY in Society”. ✨
The event featured a look back at Porttiteatteri’s ten years of documentary theatre and a lively panel discussion on the theme of empathy, expertly facilitated by Tuomas Rantanen. The room was full of celebrants, laughter, and inspiration!
The amazing panelists who made this possible were: Kaisa Tammi, Kimmo Kumlander, Rosa-Maria Perä, and Petri Valkoma! 🙏💛
Porttiteatteri celebrates the past, and looks forward to the next ten years of creativity and connection! 🌟
Warm congratulations to Porttiteatteri from all partners of the LESE project 💐

✨ The play EMPATHY premiered on Tuesday, October 7th at 6:30 PM at the Omapohja stage of the Finnish National Theatre.
🎭 Porttiteatteri’s EMPATHY explores themes of empathy — its absence and its reconstruction. Porttiteatteri is a community theatre of people released from prison, individuals with criminal backgrounds, and professional artists. It originated from the Horror of Freedom project, produced at the Finnish National Theatre in 2015.
Since then, Porttiteatteri has operated independently, creating artistically high-quality theatre and thought-provoking social commentary that views the world through the eyes of those returning from prison.

💫 The performance is part of Porttiteatteri’s 10th anniversary celebrations and is produced in collaboration with the Finnish National Theatre’s Communities and Inclusion department.

✨During the LESE project’s training event in Helsinki, participants had the unique opportunity to witness a rehearsal of EMPATHY and engage directly with the artists. Experiencing the creative process offered valuable insight into how theatre can become a space for healing, reflection, and social dialogue.

DAY 3 - Thursday 28.8.2025
🚢 Excursion to Suomenlinna Fortress 🚢
Just a 20-minute ferry ride from Helsinki’s Market Square lies the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 🏰 This remarkable site offers a unique blend of history, nature, and stunning scenery 🌿. Construction began in the mid-18th century, when Finland was part of Sweden, making it a true cultural treasure ✨.
🎨 Echoes of Detention – A Multidisciplinary Exhibition 🎨
During our excursion, we’ll visit the Echoes of Detention Exhibition, housed in the former prison wing of Suomenlinna. 🖼️ This site-specific, multidisciplinary exhibition uses video, sound, textiles, and installations 🎶🧵 to reflect on the fortress’s past—particularly the 1918 Civil War, when the cells held those awaiting ex*****on ⚡.

A site-specific exhibition of multidisciplinary art in the former detention cells of Suomenlinna, normally closed to the public.
