Why Finland is a great place to raise children?

One thing many people appreciate about Finland is how accessible daycare is for families.

Early childhood education here focuses a lot on play, outdoor time, emotional wellbeing, and helping children grow into confident and independent little humans — without pushing academics too early.

And something that surprises many people: private daycare in Finland is not only for wealthy families.

Both public and private daycare follow the same national education guidelines, so everyday life for children is often quite similar:

• lots of play
• time outside every day
• learning through daily activities
• support for social and emotional development
• safe, high-quality care.

The differences are usually smaller things like group size or a special focus, for example languages or nature-based activities. 🌱

Because families can receive municipal support and Kela benefits, private daycare can also be an option for many middle-income families — sometimes with costs fairly close to public daycare.

The Finnish system is built around a simple idea: every child deserves access to good early education, regardless of family income.

Today, we had the pleasure of visiting Norlandia PuijonKuppee, and it was a great experience for our group.

During the visit, we were given a guided tour of the premises along with a detailed introduction to the work and daily routines in the nursing home. We also had the opportunity to meet some of the residents and learn more about their everyday life.

In addition, we gained insight into the important role of the staff and the variety of tasks involved in working in the care sector. The visit provided a realistic and valuable overview of what working in this field looks like in practice.

Overall, the experience was very positive. It helped our immigrant clients better understand what it is like to work in the care sector in Kuopio and offered useful perspective for their future career paths.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Norlandia for the warm welcome and for arranging such an informative visit.

Work culture in Finland

Finnish work culture is built on trust, equality, and straightforward communication. It may feel different at first, but these values create a respectful and efficient workplace.

🤝 Low hierarchy – First‑name basis, no formal titles

💬 Direct communication – Clear, honest, and to the point

⏱ Punctuality – Meetings start exactly on time

✔️ Reliability – If you promise something, you deliver

🔕 Silence is normal – No need to fill every pause

🏡 Work–life balance – Private life stays private

☕ Don’t forget coffee breaks—they’re part of the culture too.

When a Need Becomes an Opportunity

Moving to a new country often means starting from scratch. Three years ago, Svetlana arrived in Finland with her daughter. She began studying to become a nurse and even secured a temporary contract in the field. Yet while building a new life, she also found herself stepping onto an unexpected new path
The idea for her business came from a very personal challenge. When her daughter was about to turn eight, she wanted to organize a memorable birthday celebration. Back in her home country, professional entertainers, themed parties, and children's event services were easy to find. In Finland, she struggled to find exactly what she was looking for.

So, she decided to create it herself.

She transformed her home into an adventure space, moving furniture, designing a story, and creating an unforgettable experience for the children. The response surprised her. Parents continued talking about the party long afterward, sharing how much their children had enjoyed it.

What started as one birthday celebration gradually grew into a business. Today, she organizes bubble shows and children's events and is invited to daycare centers, community events, and private celebrations. She is also exploring opportunities to create experiences for adults.

The journey has not been without challenges. Although she speaks English, French, German, Ukrainian, and Russian, improving her Finnish remains an important step toward expanding her services and reaching more people.

Her story is a reminder that entrepreneurship does not always begin with a business plan. Sometimes it begins with a simple need, a willingness to try something new, and the courage to turn an idea into reality in a completely new country.

At International House, we are always inspired by stories of people who bring their skills, creativity, and determination to build new opportunities in Finland.

At International House Kuopio, we are happy to support international talents as they take steps toward working life in Finland. Oksana from Ukraine recently completed a work try-out with us, and in the text below, she shares her experience of Finnish work culture, rebuilding confidence, and the importance of giving newcomers opportunities to show their skills in practice.

"I have experience working in different countries, including Ukraine, England, and Spain, but Finnish work culture was new to me and felt quite different. From the very first day, the atmosphere was welcoming and supportive — I truly felt accepted and part of the team.

After a long maternity leave, I initially felt unsure of myself and lacked confidence. This experience helped me gradually rebuild that confidence, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity. It gave me a safe environment to rediscover my skills and regain trust in my professional abilities.

I hope my future workplace will have a similar atmosphere — with people who are open, supportive, and genuinely positive to work with.

Thank you, International House, for your support, guidance, and for giving me the chance to practice and demonstrate my skills.

I wish more companies in Finland would offer similar opportunities to foreigners. Work try-out periods are a great way to see a person’s potential in practice, beyond just a CV, and they help employers discover motivated and capable professionals. At the same time, they give newcomers a fair chance to integrate, understand the local work culture, and prove themselves.

Creating more of these opportunities would benefit both sides — helping companies find great talent while making it easier for international professionals to build their careers in Finland."
