Imagine running a business for 155 years... and still being the best in the country at what you do.

That's exactly what Blackburn's Ainsworth Jewellers has just achieved after being named Jewellery Retailer of the Year at the 2026 National Association of Jewellers Awards. 🏆

Founded in 1870, the business has stayed in the Ainsworth family for five generations and remains Blackburn town centre's longest-established business. Today, Phil Ainsworth and Helen Dimmick are continuing that story while planning for the future.

It's a fantastic achievement for a business that has been helping Blackburn sparkle for more than a century and a half.

Congratulations to Phil, Helen and the whole Ainsworth team. 👏

Know a woman who has been putting off having her cervical smear?

Please encourage her to visit the NHS Living Well bus while it’s at Women Zone on Tuesday 20th October. It will be parked up on Duckworth Street between 11am and 4pm.

Appointments aren’t needed, making it a really convenient way to have the cervical screening test.

It takes less than 10 minutes and having the test in the safe, comfortable and private space on board the Living Well bus is a lot like having it in your GP practice, with female NHS staff.

Cervical screening has the potential to save lives – it tests for HPV (or human papillomavirus) which can cause cervical cancer, meaning treatment can be given before it can turn into cervical cancer.

This screening is available to women aged 25 to 64.

⛸️✨ The countdown is on! Blackburn is ready to take centre stage in the world of ice dance. 🌍

Next Monday to Wednesday, Blackburn Ice Arena will welcome talented solo ice dancers from across the globe for the International Solo Ice Dance Competitions!

With 85 competitors representing 15 countries, it promises to be a fantastic celebration of talent, dedication and artistry on the ice. Expect captivating performances as skaters put their skills to the test in front of expert judges, including officials who have officiated at the Olympic Games. 🌟

And there's plenty of local pride, too! ❤️💙🤍 Seven skaters coached by Alexei Kislitsyn and Natalia Pestova will be competing on home ice, including British squad members Amelia and Anna Maria. Come along and help make it a memorable experience for them!

The Recipe 4 Health Award recognises food businesses, including schools and nurseries, that promote healthy eating, environmental issues and social responsibility. It looks at:

Cleanliness and fairness – making sure food is accurately described and safe to eat

Allergen awareness

Alcohol awareness

Healthy eating

Environmental focus – reducing food miles and getting rid of waste responsibly

Tudor House Day nursery is a new gold award holder. The award is free and available on three levels;

Bronze - for businesses with a minimum of a 3* food hygiene rating
Silver - for businesses with a minimum of a 4* food hygiene rating
Gold - for businesses with a minimum of a 5* food hygiene rating

No child or young person should have to navigate grief alone.

That's why we're proud to be supporting The Wave Project, a new bereavement support service providing free help for children, young people and families across Blackburn with Darwen.

Following a successful launch event at Ewood Park attended by around 100 local residents, the service is now open and will offer support to around 120 people each year.

If your family has experienced the loss of someone important, support is available.

For years, Jim Shorrock had to hide who he was.

Between 1967 and 2000, it was against the law to be LGBT in the British Armed Forces. Jim served in the RAF through the late 70s and 80s, and like thousands of others, he had to watch who he was seen with. He left after six years, aged just 24.

He shouldn't have had to.

The government has now recognised that what happened was wrong, and there's a payment scheme to help put it right. But it won't be open forever as applications close on 12 December 2026.

🚧 Emergency road closure – Sough Road, Darwen 🚧

Please be aware that an emergency road closure is currently in place on Sough Road, between Grimshaw Street and Watery Lane at the junction with Secreto.

Our teams quickly responded to residents’ concerns about a small hole in the road and have carried out a temporary repair.

The issue has now been reported to United Utilities, who need to investigate further.

The closure will remain in place until United Utilities have visited the site and assessed the issue and decided what further works, if any, are required.

We all want Blackburn town centre and Townsmoor to be places where everyone feels safe and welcome.

We’re proposing to renew the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for these areas. It helps us tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, and we want to know what you think before any decision is made.

The proposed PSPO includes a new rule for Blackburn Bus Station, aimed at people who stay or repeatedly return without a travel-related reason.

If you’re waiting for a bus, buying a ticket, meeting someone after your journey, dealing with a delay, or using the shops, none of that changes. 🚌

That’s where Louie Says comes in.

Created by Blackburn with Darwen’s Public Health team, Louie Says is a simple three step approach to toilet training, designed to support families from around six months old. 🧻

The toolkit has been piloted across the borough, bringing together the knowledge and experience of Family Hubs, early year professionals, NHS specialists and parents to help families. 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒

Toilet training doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a journey of little steps, new routines and encouragement along the way. ✅
