To mark the end of Disability Pride Month, we are shining a light on some of the stories in our collection that centre Scottish disability history and disabled experiences.

Founded in 1871, Glasgow Deaf Athletic Football Club is older than both Celtic and Rangers, and is actually the oldest deaf 11's football team in the world. In 'Glasgow Deaf Athletic F.C.' [ref 21790], director George McGowen interviews players past and present, breaks down the club's storied history, and explores why deaf football is still needed in the 21st century. Many d/Deaf people identify as disabled, and GDAFC demonstrates how vital it is to continue improving access to sports and leisure activities across Scotland.

This coming Wednesday we welcome the University of Glasgow's Dr Andrew Hoolachan for a discussion rethinking our city's relationship with rain. The talk is based on his influential report (which inspired both a motion passed by Glasgow City Council and a sound art album), that moves beyond technical drainage to focus on the everyday lived experience of a wet climate. Before and after the talk you can drop in to the access centre to hear the sound piece ‘Experiences of Rain’, which was created by a local group of artists in collaboration with the National Library of Scotland. In KODIAK ISLAND from circa 1935, her explorative spirit is made apparent as Hutchison documents the people, landscape, and wild flowers between the Aleutian Islands and Kodiak Island, Alaska.

🎂 Happy birthday to the late, great Eddie McConnell. An avid filmmaker in his lifetime, McConnell utilised various audio-visual techniques to push against the leading idea that documentary had to be an explicitly 'social art' (being "more into...the beauty, the wonder...as opposed to social realism or contention"). In THE BIG MILL (1963) - a highly commended film about sheet steel production that earned McConnell a photography credit - this ethos comes apparent in its indulgent tracking shots, dramatic use of light, and aesthetic fascination with the hands of workers (which would later be elaborated on in his directorial work SECOND GLANCE 'HANDS').

"To show that you're there and that you can march [...] it's a statement about workers and their solidarity with each other."

This International Workers' Day we're looking back at 'GLASGOW BY THE WAY: May Day Rally' [ref 4898] from 1987. Scotland has a strong history of worker solidarity, and May Day is often commemorated locally with marches, rallies, and other actions.
