10 YEARS AGO, the UK VOTES TO LEAVE THE EU!
On this day 23 June 2016, the EU membership referendum took place in the United Kingdom and Gibraltar, to ask the electorate whether the country should Remain a member of, or Leave, the European Union.

The Result was:
Leave: 17,410,742. 51.89%
Remain: 16,141,241. 48.11%

The British mainstream media, and virtually the entire political establishment, went into shock, and has never properly recovered. The resignation, yesterday, of Keir Starmer as leader of the Labour Party, can be traced back to the instability in the "mainstream" parties which the vote created.

In 2016, in Scotland, unlike in England, the entire media establishment was for Remain. The leaders of every single political party at Holyrood were for Remain. They literally stood shoulder-to-shoulder in photoshoots!

Of the 129 MSPs, only 5 back-benchers were for Leave. Basically, the Leave vote went entirely unrepresented in the mainstream.

Yet, still, despite having nobody to speak for them in the mainstream, over 1 million people in Scotland voted to Leave.

Remain: 1,661,191. 62%
Leave: 1,018,322. 38%

This represented an extraordinary number of people for a political position which was entirely unsupported and unrepresented by the Scottish media and political class.

It makes you wonder what the vote would have been if the media and political establishment had promoted Leave as the fashionable option!

REMEMBERING FIELD MARSHAL SIR HENRY WILSON MP
On this day, 22 June 1922, one of Britain's most famous Generals, and a serving Ulster Unionist MP, was murdered by two IRA fanatics outside his home in Belgravia, after returning from unveiling a war memorial to railwaymen at Liverpool Street station.

He was born on 5 May 1864, in Currygrane, County Longford, in what is now the Republic of Ireland.

In 1918 he served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (the head of the British Army).

He opened the Ulster Memorial Tower in Thiepval, France, on 19 November 1921, in dedication to the contributions of the 36th Ulster Division during World War I.

His murderers were caught, tried and hanged.

A recent book has examined the tragedy: "Great Hatred: The Assassination of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson MP" by Ronan McGreevy.

McGreevy believes it was Michael Collins who ordered the murder: "He was hoping to remove what he saw as a dangerous foe of Irish nationalism, and someone whom he blamed for the behaviour of security forces in the north."

The murder precipitated an internal civil war between various factions of republicanism, and two months later, an IRA gunman killed Collins. McGreevy says, "If Wilson hadn't been shot, Collins wouldn't have been shot."

GUY ANSON MAUNSELL and his SEA FORTS
On this day 20 June in 1961, Guy Anson Maunsell passed away. He was the British civil engineer responsible for the design of the World War II "Maunsell Forts", the Navy and Army Sea Forts used by the United Kingdom for the defence of the Thames and Mersey estuaries.

The eerie hulks of the Thames Forts are still standing, around 6 miles off the coast of Whitstable, out from the mouth of the Thames.

There are 4 Naval Forts in the Thames:
Rough Sands (HM Fort Roughs)
Sunk Head
Tongue Sands
Knock John

And 3 Army Forts:
Nore
Red Sands (pictured)
Shivering Sands

These Forts shot down 22 aircraft and about 30 flying bombs!

There were 3 Army Forts placed in the Mersey.
Queens AA Towers
Formby AA Towers
Burbo AA Towers

The Mersey Forts never saw action and were dismantled after the War.

Maunsell was born on 1 September 1884 in India. He is buried in Southborough Cemetery, Royal Tunbridge Wells.
