108 years ago today, more than 50,000 people took to the fields of Ireland and delivered a masterclass in anti-colonial resistance.

In August 1918, under the despised Defence of the Realm Act (DORA), British authorities declared GAA matches illegal without a police permit - a direct attempt to criminalise our national games and break the spirit of a rising movement.

The response was total, unified defiance.

At 3:00 PM on Sunday, 4th August, every parish across Ireland threw the ball in simultaneously.

Throughout County Down, clubs bypassed armed police checkpoints by keeping fixtures local. In Newry, Emmets faced Fág a' Bealach. In Banbridge, Ballyvarley Shamrocks played John Mitchels. And in Hilltown, locals mocked the occupying administration by fielding two teams named ‘DORA’ and ‘Small Nation’.

Overwhelmed by mass civil disobedience, crown forces could only watch as imperial authority collapsed. The permit rule was shattered in a single afternoon.

Gaelic Sunday wasn’t just about sport - it was an assertion of absolute popular sovereignty.

Today, we remember the players, officials, and communities across Down and Ireland who proved that a nation’s identity belongs to its people, never an empire.
