In July 2026, our expert team of medics treated 221 patients, meaning once again we had the busiest month of the year so far.

Treating these individuals, who were so critically injured that they did not have time to get to hospital, involved performing 45 rapid sequence intubations, 41 arterial lines, 25 blood transfusions and three instances of REBOA on scene.

We were the first team to successfully provide pre-hospital REBOA in 2018, which is a complex balloon surgery used to help control internal bleeding. This is just one of the firsts our charity has completed; just one of the pre-hospital innovations we have successfully developed to help save more lives in London.

To commemorate the start of Air Ambulance Week, we're highlighting the times the air ambulance community comes together for mutual aid missions. This is where an air ambulance will request the assistance of a neighbouring air ambulance. We might be called to a county outside of London, or we might request another air ambulance to fly into London. This usually happens when there is a incident with multiple patients who need emergency care.

Thank you to all the air ambulances in the UK for serving both your county and your neighbouring counties when needed.

Why does London’s Air Ambulance carry blood?🩸

In the last few years, an average of 21 patients a month have needed a blood transfusion from our team.

When someone suffers major blood loss, every minute matters. Losing a significant amount of blood can cause blood pressure to fall and reduce the amount of oxygen reaching vital organs.

That’s why our doctors and paramedics carry blood with them, allowing them to treat life-threatening blood loss at the scene, before a patient reaches hospital.

It’s just one of the ways our team brings advanced trauma care directly to critically injured patients across London.
