At Brompton Library, we are celebrating diversity through the Summer Reading Challenge theme: Read to the Beat.
Here's what we've been up to:
Musical themes
Thinking about our visitors, readers and families who frequently attend our family Crafty Creations workshops on a Saturday, we themed the workshops as Greek, Italian, East Asian (China, Japan…), South Asian (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka…), and Caribbean (Carnival time). We also designed some fabulous glittering costumes for singers, ‘made’ guitars, played, and listened to music from various cultures.
Examples
The story of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of ancient Greece's most famous myths about love, grief, and the power of music. It follows a legendary musician, Orpheus, who descends into the Underworld to rescue his bride. The power and beauty of his music persuaded Hades and Persephone to make an exception and let Eurydice leave. But…
For the Indian Workshop, Pallavi Umarji, and her family shared traditions from their culture (we are planning more for Divali).
On 12 September, we invited Cheri Coco, for a fun-filled, free interactive workshop to bring stories to life through music, movement, and imagination.
Displays
The Children’s library is buzzing and bubbling. Fa-bu-lous! We have successfully completed the Summer Reading Challenge display.
