Downham Library has partnered with to offer a sensory cinematic play session for SEND families this May half term. The nature themed session is inspired by neighbouring Downham Fields and the fleet of parakeets in nearby Hither Green Cemetery.

🗓️ 30 May 2026.
⏱️ 2.30-3.30pm.
📍Downham Library, at Downham Leisure Centre BR1.

The session will be flexible but structured. It will take place upstairs in the library in the gallery space and meeting room. There will be a screening of some short films (with a bingo game) then free play and sensory light games. There will be a chilled soft seating area plus a colouring and duplo table away from the main activity. It will be a chance to engage with cinema in a relaxed, hands-on, fun and judgement free space. Everyone is welcome to come and go throughout the session.

The session is free, but spaces are limited so booking is essential. More information and booking here: https://lewisham.events.mylibrary.digital/event?id=338310.

📚 New findings from the BookTrust 's family survey shows something hopeful: families love reading together. But it also reveals something worrying: daily shared reading has dropped significantly.

The survey makes one thing clear: families want to spend more time with books, but growing pressures are making it harder.

That’s where your local library comes in. We’re here to make reading together easy, joyful and completely free.

With your free library card, you can:

📖 Borrow books your child will love— from audiobooks and tactile board books to dual‑language picture books, comics and so much more.

🎶 Join our Storytimes — share stories, sing nursery rhymes and build early language skills.

📱 Access online resources — ebooks and audiobooks at the tap of a button, at home or on the go.

Pop in for a chat about how we can help you build strong reading habits with your little ones — and give them the best start in life.

What does a creative life sound like when you listen back? 🎶
Join authors Lloyd Bradley, Dan Hancox () and Emma Warren (_emmalwarren_) for an in‑conversation panel exploring how music shaped their teenage years and led them to their creative paths. Through stories and shared listening, they’ll be playing tracks they’ve personally chosen — charting the sounds, scenes and moments that influenced their work, politics and cultural thinking.
