Book review: The Impossible Thing by Belinda Bauer
An absolutely brilliant book starting off from the (real life) premise of The Medway Reds – a very unusual set of blown birds’ eggs that went missing. The whole thing about egg collecting is intriguing, being swung on ropes down cliffs, and the relationships between the main (young) characters are very moving and atypical. Throw in a bit of a mystery element, and what’s not to like? Clio G

Book review
The Names by Florence Knapp
A woman suffering under a domineering husband takes her nine year old daughter and new born son to register the baby's birth. The husband chooses one, the wife another and the daughter chooses a third. The book traces the events of the three possible lives of the boy according to which name he was given. Although the subjects it tackles are very difficult, this is a book with a lot of love and hope. The author skilfully manages the different timelines with various other characters weaving across the three stories. A really good read. Justi C
