A new chapter begins in Accra.

After several assignments across the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Ambassador Thomas Oertle has arrived in Ghana to take up his new role as Switzerland’s Ambassador to Ghana, Togo and Benin.

The Deputy Head of Mission, Ms. Magdalena Wüst and her team were pleased to participate in a Workshop organized by ITC-She Trades program and supported by Switzerland through SECO, bringing together close to 250 Ghanaian entrepreneurs, many of them women-led businesses.

The programme equipped participants with practical digital tools and AI skills to help them grow their businesses, while strengthening the digital, financial and business capabilities needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

Investing in digital skills for women entrepreneurs is an important step towards building more resilient, innovative and competitive businesses in Ghana.

How can District Assemblies serve citizens better?

At the 2-day National Dialogue on Decentralization and Responsive Governance held in Accra, our Deputy Head of Cooperation, Magdalena Wuest, called on national level institutions to strengthen accountability, citizen participation, and the financial autonomy of districts to enable them serve the citizenry well.

Ms Magdalena Wuest delivered these remarks on behalf of Development Partners and International NGOs working in the field of decentralization given that Switzerland is the co-chair for the Sector Working Group. The Vice-President of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang opened the 2-day dialogue on the theme Re-setting Democratic Decentralization for Accountable Public Service Delivery and Accelerated Local Development, calling on all public officials to place the needs of the citizens at the forefront of development decisions.

The Embassy of Switzerland was pleased to attend the opening ceremony of the Advanced Digital Skills Training for ICT Coordinators, an initiative supporting the digital transformation of Ghana’s education sector.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, Mode Plus Innovation Hub, Intellite IT Solutions and Uniwiz Foundation, is equipping ICT Coordinators with practical skills in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Networking and Digital Education Content Development.
The initiative also places a strong emphasis on women’s participation and leadership in ICT, recognising the importance of an inclusive digital workforce.
Switzerland is committed to supporting digital skills development, innovation, gender inclusion and human capital development in Ghana. Strengthening the capacities of ICT professionals within the education system is an important investment in Ghana’s digital future.

Our Chargée d'Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of Switzerland to Ghana, Togo and Benin, Mrs Janine Walz delivered these remarks at the 9th Session of Ghana Urban Forum in Accra.

Mrs Walz together with Ministers of State, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (representing the President of Ghana), and the UN Resident Coordinator, launched the newly developed National Urban Policy (2026-2035) and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy. She called for a coordinated and an all-hands-on deck approach to translate policy to action, and action to results.

Achieving Ghana's tax-to-GDP ratio target as expressed in Finance Minister's mid-year budget review statement is essential to deliver the needed public goods to citizens. This requires work in several areas, including improving tax compliance by taxpayers.

This is why Switzerland is supporting the Ghana Revenue Authority through the World Bank with technical assistance in many areas. The use of data and analytics from taxpayers to design compliance measures as well as training tax authorities in using social and behavioral change communication strategies for tax compliance are two such areas.

The Governance and PFM Specialist at the Embassy of Switzerland in Ghana, Dr Charles Othniel Abbey, re-emphasized the importance of the technical assistance when he opened the training for GRA on behavioral change together with the World Bank and the Commissioner for Support Services of the GRA recently at the World Bank office.

Switzerland is proud to support Ghana's Sustainable Finance Roadmap launch alongside IFC - International Finance Corporation, Bank of Ghana and the broad coalition of financial regulators and industry bodies. This landmark framework will embed ESG across Ghana's financial system and mobilise capital for sustainable development.

As Dr. Johnson Asiama, Governor of the BoG, noted at the launch, “Sustainable finance is increasingly central to financial stability, long-term investment, and economic resilience. It is reshaping where global capital flows and what investors expect of our financial systems.”
