A Warm Send-Off as VP Jallow Concludes Successful China Mission

As His Excellency Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow concluded his official visit to the People's Republic of China, the Deputy Secretary-General of the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD), Mr. Sun Linhu, personally saw the Vice President off at the airport, a gesture that speaks volumes about the warmth and depth of the relationship between The Gambia and China.

Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, The Gambia continues to forge partnerships that serve the development aspirations of the Gambian people and this visit to China stands as yet another milestone in that journey.

The farewell was a fitting close to a mission marked by meaningful engagements, productive dialogue, and strengthened bilateral ties. From high-level participation in the 2026 Forum on Global Human Rights Governance to site visits, university engagements, and substantive exchanges with Chinese counterparts, Vice President Jallow's visit leaves behind a legacy of deepened cooperation between the two nations.

As the delegation departs, the bonds of friendship and cooperation between The Gambia and China remain stronger than ever.

On the sidelines of Vice President His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow's official visit to China, the Office of the Vice President's media team had an exclusive conversation with His Excellency Masanneh N. Kinteh, The Gambia's Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

Ambassador Kinteh, who has been serving in Beijing since 2021, painted a picture of a bilateral relationship that has grown from strength to strength. "The Gambia-China relations is at an excellent level," he said, noting that China's own journey out of poverty gives it a unique understanding of The Gambia's development aspirations.

Among the milestones he highlighted is the remarkable growth in capacity building from a handful of Gambians trained in China to over 1,000 in a single year alone, drawn from the civil service, public sector, and private sector. Roads, bridges, electricity infrastructure, and scholarship programmes have further cemented a partnership built on mutual respect and shared goals.

According to Ambassador Kinteh, the greatest achievement is not measured in bricks and mortar. "How many lives have you touched? How many lives have you changed? That is what matters to me," he said, a reflection of his people-centred approach to diplomacy.

The Ambassador also spoke warmly about the welfare of Gambians living across his jurisdiction, which spans China, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea. From consular outreach to supporting community members in distress including personally mobilising embassy staff contributions to help a young Gambian student facing a serious health crisis. His Excellency demonstrated that the Embassy of The Gambia in Beijing operates as a family.

As the 2026 Forum on Global Human Rights Governance draws to a close in Beijing, His Excellency Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow has described the mission as a major success not only for the forum itself, but for the vital connections and opportunities for collaboration it has opened up for The Gambia.

Speaking to our media team, H.E. the Vice President highlighted several key takeaways from the delegation's visits, including China's impressive zero-carbon port operations, the Luban Workshop's model for technical and vocational education, and the Tianjin Eco-City's smart governance system all areas he intends to explore for collaboration upon returning to Banjul.

On The Gambia's environmental commitments, the Vice President reaffirmed the government's ambition, pointing to the Jambur Solar Plant, the new 50-megawatt Soma Solar Plant, and an additional 100 megawatts of solar energy in the pipeline as evidence of the country's serious transition away from fossil fuels.

H.E. the Vice President also expressed deep admiration for China's demonstrated commitment to development, noting that what delegates witnessed on the ground including the transformation of villages from poverty to prosperity was reflected in the voices of nearly 400 delegates gathered from across the world.

Finally, H.E. the Vice President extended sincere gratitude to the Chinese authorities for the exceptional preparation and warm reception accorded to the Gambian delegation, and to the Gambian Embassy team in Beijing for their unwavering support throughout the mission.

The Gambia goes home energised, hopeful, and ready to translate these engagements into lasting progress.

The 2026 Forum on Global Human Rights Governance opened in Beijing, bringing together about 400 delegates from different countries and international organisations to discuss the theme: โ€œJoint Development, Shared Human Rights: The 40th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development and a New Vision for Global Human Rights Governance.โ€

During the forum, China unveiled its National Human Rights Action Plan (2026โ€“2030), reaffirming its commitment to protecting people's rights, promoting social fairness and justice, and ensuring that the benefits of modernisation are shared more equitably among all citizens.

Participants emphasised the importance of placing development at the center of global human rights governance, noting that access to education, healthcare, clean water, energy, and sustainable livelihoods are essential for the realisation of fundamental human rights.

The forum also highlighted the need for stronger international cooperation, inclusive development, respect for diverse national paths to progress, and practical action to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and conflict.

The Gambia's Vice President, H.E. Mohammed BS Jallow, took the floor today at the 2026 Forum on Global Human Rights Governance in Beijing to deliver a powerful message on green development and human rights.

Speaking before hundreds of delegates, VP Jallow made clear that The Gambia, though one of the smallest contributors to global emissions, is among the hardest hit by climate change. Rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and unpredictable rains are not just environmental problems, they are human rights problems.

His message was direct: "There can be no sustainable development without environmental protection, and there can be no meaningful protection of human rights without sustainable development."

He called on world leaders, institutions and partners to place people at the centre of all development decisions and to ensure that no nation is left to face alone a crisis it did little to create.

The forum, held to mark 40 years since the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Right to Development, runs from June 11 to 12 in Beijing, China.
