A former hospital corpsman and retired warrant officer has donated a collection of historical photographs and memorabilia to U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Guam and U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, preserving a vital piece of Navy Medicine’s medical legacy supporting military operations in the Pacific during the Vietnam War.

Defense Health Agency Director Vice Adm. Darin K. Via visited U.S. Naval Hospital Guam in Agana Heights, Guam, July 10, 2026. He toured the overseas military medical treatment facility to highlight the DHA’s mission as a combat support agency, emphasizing how the hospital’s daily healthcare operations directly generate warfighter medical readiness and joint warfighting capabilities across the Indo-Pacific.

After more than four decades of dedicated service to military medicine in the Pacific region, Mr. James Terlaje, the environmental program manager at U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Guam, was honored by leadership July 10, 2026 ahead of his upcoming retirement.

Defense Health Agency Director U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Darrin K. Via presented Terlaje with a director’s coin of excellence, recognizing his 41 years of steadfast dedication and continuous impact on the USNH Guam's environmental readiness.

Serving as the environmental protection specialist and primary point of contact for USNH Guam’s environmental programs, Terlaje has been a cornerstone of facility safety. He flawlessly managed the lifecycle of all hazardous materials and regulated medical waste. Military hospitals and clinics are introducing ambient listening technology to help your providers focus more on you and less on their computer screens.

What is ambient listening? It’s a secure voice recognition technology that helps providers create clinical notes.

How does it work? Ambient listening technology works in the background during medical appointments. It captures the conversation between you and your provider and converts it to text. Then it organizes important medical details into clinical notes. Your provider reviews these notes and adds them to your health record. You can find the notes in the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal.

How does this support my health? Ambient listening technology can help you feel more connected to your provider. It helps your provider engage with you more directly and spend less time using their computer.

Do I need to do anything? Your provider will ask you for your consent before using ambient listening during your appointment.

Where is it available? All military hospitals and clinics will have access to ambient listening technology in the coming months.

Happy 114th Birthday to the U.S. Navy Dental Corps!

U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (USNMRTC) Guam proudly celebrated the 114th birthday of the Navy Dental Corps on Aug. 20, 2026, with a cake cutting ceremony using dental floss to make the first cut, signifying the tools of the trade.

In keeping with the time-honored tradition, the cake was cut by the oldest Dental Corps officer, Cmdr. Grant Layton, and the youngest Sailor, Hospitalman Fabiola Ayala-Perez. Capt. James Demitrack, commanding officer of USNMRTC Guam, delivered remarks highlighting the importance of the Dental Corps to the command’s mission.

Join us in wishing a very happy 114th birthday to all Dental Corps officers and Sailors, past and present. Thank you for your leadership, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the health and readiness of our force!

Out of an abundance of caution and to protect the health and safety of our patients, staff, and visitors, please follow all guidance issued by local public health and water authorities.

Our facility has implemented appropriate precautions to ensure that patient care can continue safely. The Boil Water Notice will remain in effect until local authorities lift the Notice. We will provide updates as additional information becomes available.

During the Notice, drinking fountains and ice machines in the hospital will be closed. Please bring bottled water with you as needed if visiting the Hospital.
