River Corrib Search – 26th March

Galway Civil Defence were tasked by An Garda Síochána Galway to the River Corrib this morning to assist in a search for a missing person. Boat and drone teams were deployed to the area.
Mayo Civil Defence supported operations with an additional drone team. We worked alongside Irish Coast Guard - Costelloe Bay, with units also active on the water. Rescue 115 attended the scene for a period, and Oranmore Maree Coastal Search Unit provided further support along the river.

Search Operation – Lough Corrib (23rd March)

Galway Civil Defence was tasked by An Garda Síochána last night to assist in a search operation for an overdue fisherman on upper Lough Corrib.
Our volunteers responded promptly, with 10 members deploying in three vehicles to support search efforts along the north-eastern shoreline, working in coordination with the Irish Coast Guard - Costelloe Bay. We were also supported by colleagues from Mayo Civil Defence, who deployed their drone team to assist in the search operation.
Boat teams were placed on standby; however, due to challenging weather conditions at the time, launching was not deemed safe.
We are pleased to report that the missing fisherman was located safe and well early this morning by local fishermen in the area.
We would like to thank all agencies and individuals involved for their coordinated efforts and swift response.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of a former Unit Officer of Galway Civil Defence.

Having joined in the late 1970s, he was a central figure within the organisation for decades, giving a lifetime of dedicated and selfless service. He played a huge role in shaping the skills of so many members, generously sharing his knowledge of ladder hinges and rescue techniques, leaving a legacy that will continue for years to come.

Beyond training and operations, he was at the heart of the social side of Civil Defence - a great character whose presence lifted any room. Many will fondly remember sitting beside him, always keeping a close eye on their steak!
He will be remembered not only for his commitment and leadership, but for his humour, camaraderie, and the lasting friendships he built along the way.
Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Civil Defence can provide multiple specialist disciplines in support of the Primary Response Agencies:

🚤 Boat Search Teams
🚁 Drone Teams
📡 Side Scan Sonar
🗺 Cloud-based interactive mapping for real-time coordination

When incidents require it, we scale our response - working closely with our neighbouring colleagues in Mayo Civil Defence and Clare Civil Defence.

Their professionalism, commitment and continued support are hugely valued.

Strong partnerships. Shared capability. One coordinated response.

Last night at our weekly training meeting we had one of our own volunteers Sergeant Harney present to us a very informative presentation on volunteer charter, children first, crime scene preservation and drug recognition and their effects.

This was a county event and we had over 60 volunteers attend. Thank you to our unit officer for organizing the talk and for all the volunteers who travelled to attend.
