**Should India Restrict Social Media Access for Children Under 16?**
The issue has recently become part of a serious legal and public discussion following observations made by the Madras High Court.
In its remarks, the court suggested that India could consider measures similar to those being explored in countries such as Australia, where social media access for children below 16 is facing stricter regulation. The concern is not about censorship, but about protecting young users in an increasingly complex digital environment.
The judges pointed to several risks associated with excessive social media use among children, including mental health pressure, digital addiction, cyberbullying, and exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. According to the court, uncontrolled screen time and online activity may affect a child’s emotional development, concentration, and overall psychological well-being.
Australia’s approach was mentioned because it places greater responsibility on social media companies to prevent underage users from accessing their platforms. The observation suggests that India may also need to review its digital policies as internet use among younger age groups continues to increase.
At present, there is no ban and no immediate law in place. The court’s remarks mainly serve as a starting point for wider policy discussions, expert consultation, and possible future legislation.
