Experience Traditional Mountain Village Life at MAHORA

Nestled in a peaceful rural landscape with views of the Myoko Mountain Range, MAHORA is a private vacation rental housed in a restored traditional residence built over 120 years ago.

Impressive beams, sturdy pillars, and a sunken hearth retain the traditional aspects of houses in Japan’s snow country, while modern comforts ensure a relaxing stay. This peaceful retreat is perfect for guests to unwind and experience Myoko’s topography and culture.

The dinner menu consists of dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Hands-on cooking experiences where guests prepare regional specialties alongside local residents are also popular.

Every season brings a different countryside village experience. Plant rice and forage for edible wild plants in spring, watch fireflies and enjoy “nagashi somen” (flowing noodles) in summer, harvest rice in autumn, and explore on snowshoes in winter. Enjoy this unique opportunity to experience Japan’s nature-rich agricultural traditions!

The Sado Island Gold Mines - A World Cultural Heritage Site With 400 Years of History!

The Sado Island Gold Mines were registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in July 2024!

Full-scale development of the Sado Gold Mine began in the mid-16th century and continued all the way until 1989. At its peak, it was one of the world's leading gold and silver mines, and the techniques and management methods that developed here had a major influence on mines throughout Japan.

Doyu no Warito, a huge open-cut mine that split a mountain in two, and the tunnels beneath are open to visitors. You can learn about the history of gold and silver mining from the relics of each period, along with lifesize animatronics recreating scenes of everyday life in the mines.

Enjoy the Retro Atmosphere of Nuttari Terrace Street!

Not far from Niigata Station, Nuttari Terrace Street is a shopping street that opened in 2015 using renovated rowhouses that once hosted the town market.

A bunch of unique restaurants, cafes, shops, florists, and more line the street, which retains the retro vibe of the former market, making it a go-to destination for tourists from across Japan.

A morning market (winter market from December to March) is held on the first Sunday of each month. Almost all of the shops open at 9:00 am, and you can enjoy limited-edition early morning dishes, workshops, and more, amongst a fun and festive atmosphere.

Magnificent Views at Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park!

Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park, located on the border of Niigata and Nagano, is known for its concentration of volcanic and non-volcanic mountains born through movement of the earth’s crust.

Out of all the distinctive mountains in the area, the most famous are Mt. Amakazari, Mt. Hiuchi, and Mt. Myoko.

Mt. Amakazari, recognized as part of the Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geopark, is famous for its vast fields of bamboo grass. At the summit, which commands Sea of Japan views, is a stone Buddhist statue, and the area is deeply revered by mountain worshippers.

Mt. Hiuchi is known for its array of stunning alpine plants, along with fiery fall foliage and the rare rock ptarmigan bird.

Mount Myoko, lined with huge rocks born from lava, has long been a site of ascetic practice and mountain worship. While a difficult climb for beginners, the exceptional hot springs of Myoko Kogen will wash away fatigue and help you recover.

3 Nature Spots to Relax Amidst Niigata’s Water and Greenery During Japan’s Summers

There are plenty of places filled with water and greenery that you can enjoy during Niigata’s summers.

Here are some spots where you can take in these beautiful natural landscapes:

・Bijinbayashi Forest (Tokamachi City)
A beech forest with trees around 100 years old. It came to be called "Bijinbayashi" (Forest of Beauties) because of the beauty of its tall, slender trees. Stroll among the dazzling greenery, with sunlight streaming through the leaves, and take in the refreshing breezes that occasionally pass through.

・Naena Falls (Myoko City)
A magnificent waterfall with a 55-meter drop, this is one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. Its powerful flow crashes down with a thunderous roar and sprays mist into the air! Follow the walking trail and feel the waterfall’s immense force from the suspension bridge in front of the falls or near the waterfall basin.

・Lake Okutadami (Uonuma City)
One of Japan’s largest man-made lakes, with a water storage capacity of over 600 million tons. The remote Okutadami area, known as a hidden gem, is a treasure trove of nature with mountains rising over 2,000 meters! A leisurely sightseeing boat ride across the lake reveals refreshing scenery created by the deep green forests and blue waters.

3 Exciting Events to See in Niigata - From a Giant Serpent to the World’s Largest Fireworks!

Here are some great events taking place from late August to early September in Niigata:

・Nakanoshima Suwa Shrine Lantern Festival (Nagaoka City)
This is a ritual that has been held on the eve of the Nakanoshima Suwa Shrine Autumn Grand Festival for over 100 years! Seven lanterns decorated with lights are tied together with thick straw ropes and carried by people in "happi" coats who push fiercely against each other to the sound of drums. It’s a powerful must-see spectacle!
Event period: Late August (scheduled)

・Echigo Sekikawa Taish*tamonja Festival (Sekikawa Village)
The main attraction here is the “Daija Parade,” where a huge serpent made of bamboo and straw is carried through the village. With a total length of 82.8 meters and weighing 2 tons, it is certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest snake. A fireworks display is also held the night before.
Event date: August 30 (Sun)

・Katakai Festival Asahara Shrine Autumn Grand Festival (Ojiya City)
With a history of 400 years, the Katakai Festival is also known as the "Fireworks Festival," with around 15,000 fireworks launched over two days. The biggest highlight is the world’s largest "yonshakudama" firework shell! It blooms into a massive flower spanning 800 meters across the night sky.
Event dates: September 11 (Fri) and 12 (Sat)

Niigata’s 3 Sunflower Fields to Soak Up Summer - Spectacular Views of Blue Skies and Yellow Carpets!

Under blue skies, sunflower fields stretch out with blooms facing toward the sun. Here are three spots if you want to see this kind of fantastic summer view!

・Tsunan Sunflower Field (Tsunan Town)
About 500,000 sunflowers bloom across a vast 4-hectare field. The field is divided into three sections with staggered blooming times, allowing visitors to take in the blooms over a longer period. The sunflower maze set up inside the field is especially popular with children.
Blooming period: Friday, July 24 - Sunday, August 16, 2026

・Uwasekigata Park (Niigata City)
A nature-rich park spreading out at the foot of Mt. Kakuda. Around 6,300 sunflowers bloom with the mountain in the background, creating a breathtaking sight! In the center of the sunflower field, surfinias are planted in a heart shape, forming a vivid contrast of yellow and pink.
Blooming period: Early to mid-August

・Yamamotoyama Sunflower Field (Ojiya City)
A stunning spot where sunflowers fill a roughly 3-hectare field. From the hilltop of the flower field and the adjacent viewpoint "Takusan Pocket Park," visitors can also enjoy views of the Echigo Sanzan and the Shinano River.
Blooming period: Late July to early August

3 Exquisite Kakigori to Cool Down in Niigata This Summer

Japan’s summer can be intense, so cool down with these delicious kakigori (shaved ice) treats!

・Kanmi Maruya Saryo (Niigata City)
This is a tea salon attached to the long-established Japanese and Western confectionery shop Maruya Honten. We recommend the kakigori lavishly topped with house-made syrup and espuma cream. Enjoy the fluffy texture of thinly shaved ice made with deep ocean water from Sado Island and the delicate espuma, which softly fizzes and melts in your mouth.

・YamaCafe (Kamo City)
YamaCafe is run by a long-established traditional Japanese restaurant with 200 years of history. Here, you can indulge in kakigori in an atmospheric renovated historic building, registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. We recommend the Uji Kintoki Rennyu, topped with Uji matcha, condensed milk syrup, and boiled azuki beans.

・Kanazawa Sohonpo Inada Honten Choeian (Joetsu City)
This is also a tea space attached to a long-established Japanese sweets shop. The popular summer go-to is the Shutsujin-gori, which flaunts Japanese flavors like “yomogi” (mugwort), “kuromitsu” (brown sugar syrup), and “kinako” (roasted soybean flour). It is topped with the shop’s popular Shutsujin mochi, a treat inspired by stories about the local warlord Uesugi Kenshin.

Step Into Another World at the Kitazawa Flotation Plant!

The Kitazawa Flotation Plant, located on Sado Island, was the first facility in Japan to use the “floatation beneficiation method” to separate gold and silver from other minerals. The plant processed over 50,000t of ore each month, making it the largest facility of its kind in Asia. However, once it had served its purpose, it was abandoned and now lies in ruins.

Covered by weeds and moss, the plant has been back in the global spotlight due to its resemblance to the world of Studio Ghibli's “Castle in the Sky.” At night, the remains are illuminated with colorful lights and projection mapping, adding to their newfound popularity.
