Hoarding or Trusting Allah?
We fill our homes with things we “might need one day.” Closets overflow, cupboards are packed, and storage spaces keep expanding. Yet somehow, our hearts often feel more burdened than at peace.
Today, psychologists encourage minimalism, explaining that reducing excess brings mental clarity, emotional calm, and even physical well-being.
But Islam taught this principle over 1,400 years ago.
The Companions once asked the Prophet ﷺ, “What should we spend in charity?” Allah revealed the answer:
“They ask you what they should spend. Say: ‘Whatever is beyond your needs.’” (Qur’an 2:219)
How profound! What we cling to out of fear may actually be what someone else desperately needs.
Hoarding is often a sign that we trust our possessions more than the One who provides them. Giving away what is extra is not becoming poorer—it is placing your trust in Allah, whose treasures never diminish.
Perhaps the peace we are searching for is not found in owning more, but in letting go.
