After studying beauty therapy, Tammy has spent nearly two decades honing her skills in the industry, with the last nine years devoted to her specialty, cosmetic tattooing.

Starting a business in a new place was no small leap. “I was terrified at first,” Tammy admits, “but the process of opening turned out to be relatively straightforward.”

She tapped into the power of local Facebook groups and reached out to people in the industry before the family had even settled in. That early groundwork, combined with her skill and passion, meant her business quickly found its place in the community.

It was, in fact, the sense of community that sealed the deal for Tammy and her family when they first visited North Canterbury. “We stayed with friends for a weekend, and we just fell in love,” she recalls. “My husband has always loved Christchurch, but I’m not really a big city gal. North Canterbury gave us the best of both worlds.”

Since moving, Tammy has discovered exactly what makes the region so special. “We’re truly spoiled here. We’ve got beaches, rivers, mountains, and vineyards right on our doorstep. I love how North Canterbury hasn’t lost that ‘small town’ feel, it’ got an amazing sense of community while being so close to one of New Zealand’s largest cities.”

But above all, it’s the people that stand out most for Tammy. “I’ve met the most amazing, supportive people through the journey of starting and growing my business. I feel blessed to live in such a beautiful place filled with beautiful people.”

Clare Giffard is a passionate community leader, and long-time champion of fresh, wholesome food.

Born and raised in South Auckland, Clare made her way south to Christchurch to begin her teaching career before settling in North Canterbury, where she found the space to combine her love of food, community, and the outdoors.

“I’m deeply community-focused and passionate about connecting with people and supporting the growth of vibrant, inclusive communities,” Clare says.

That commitment shines through in her many roles. From Chairperson of the ENC Board, to her contributions with the Waimakariri Arts Trust, Kaiapoi Community Garden, and beyond.

Her food journey has been just as impactful. Clare helped establish the food and beverage offerings at Pegasus Golf Club, founded Flat White Café, and today runs Urban Revival in Silverstream.

“We are a provenance-rich area, growing and crafting our own products to serve our communities. It’s a joy to witness so many passionate people working together to make this region thrive.”

👏 We couldn’t agree more.

Trent Yesberg of moved to Flaxton at age 13 and has called North Canterbury home ever since. Now 34, he says the region has shaped both his life and his work.

What began as a hobby has grown into a full-time business. Although he first tried working in the industries he studied for, it was the pull of the stables that proved impossible to ignore. “The horses had my heart, and they’ve kept me here ever since,” he says.

Together with his wife Sarah, Trent runs one of the country’s few dual-code racing stables. While most trainers specialise in either thoroughbred or standardbred racing, Trent has found success in both. On the harness side alone, the stable is fast approaching 100 training wins. An achievement that highlights just how unique their operation is. “Being dual-code definitely sets us apart and gives our owners more variety and opportunities.”

But for Trent, success isn’t just measured in trophies. His vision is simple: to create an affordable and enjoyable experience for owners and horses alike. “Winning big races is always special, but the biggest thrill for me is seeing someone celebrate their very first winner, or watching a horse reach its full potential. That’s the kind of success that lasts.”

North Canterbury, he says, has been the perfect place to build that dream. With its strong network of horse people, the region offers unmatched support. “I’d go as far as to say it’s probably the tightest group of horse people in the industry, and we bat well above our weight in terms of talent and results. It’s an exciting place to be part of.”
