💛A great night at Thomas's Marlborough for our Business After 5 last week.

A big thank you to Hamish and Tim for hosting us and giving everyone a chance to get behind the scenes of this much-loved Blenheim department store.

Hamish gave us a fascinating history lesson on Thomas’s, with plenty of stories about the highs, lows and changes the business has seen over their 110+ years in business.

His overarching message was a good one for any business owner: things have been tough before, and they’ll be tough again. Resilience, adapting to change and having a strong community around you all play a big part in getting through those tougher times.

Thanks to everyone who came along on the rainy night, enjoyed the kōrero and supported the evening, and a huge mihi to the Thomas’s team for hosting us so well.

Come on Marlborough: our C*D businesses need your support while construction continues!

For the businesses on our C*D streets, this has been going on for a while now, and it’s tough. Less foot traffic, changes to access and parking, and customers choosing to shop elsewhere all add up.

So please make the effort to shop local and support our C*D businesses.

If you’re heading out for a coffee, lunch, shopping or just a wander, make the C*D part of the plan. It might take a little more effort at the moment, but it makes a real difference.

Because the construction will eventually finish. What we don’t want is to get to the other side and find our town centre is a ghost town because businesses couldn’t survive the disruption.

Please keep supporting our C*D. It really matters for the future of our town centre!

🚶‍♀️‍➡️ We all know networking over food and drink is pretty great. And when you live in Marlborough, we’re certainly not short of good options!

But sometimes it’s nice to swap the coffee (or w**e/gin) for some fresh air, get outside and get a few steps in. That’s why we introduced Netwalking, and today EO Kylie and Board Chair Caro got out of the office to join in!

We had a great turnout, making the most of a beautiful spring day along the Taylor River. A bit of fresh air, a bit of exercise and some good conversations. Not a bad way to spend a lunch break.

Thanks to Karl from Ika Rere Cargo, who was deputised as leader of the pack, and official selfie taker! Great to have some of the team from one of our platinum sponsors, BDO, walk with us too!

Join us on the second Wednesday of every month, 12–12.30pm. No lycra required! Infants in pushchairs and dogs on leads are welcome too.

🍰 I bet you’re all wishing you came to our Coffee Catch Up this morning at the Chamber, ’cos Kylie made cake!

🍋 A Lemon and Yoghurt Cake, with a side of Greek yoghurt no less!

Our Coffee Catch Ups are held on the first Tuesday of every month, between 10 and 11am, and are a great chance to catch up with other members, keep the Chamber abreast of what’s happening in your business, and contribute to ‘solving the issues’ for the business community in Marlborough.

Our next catch up is Tuesday 6 October.

In the meantime, you can join Kylie for Netwalking next Wednesday at lunchtime. (Although there won’t be cake!)

🍷 Business After 5 at Scenic Hotel Marlborough

What a great opportunity to step inside one of our local hotels and get a taste of the hospitality that Scenic Hotel Marlborough has to offer.

It was lovely hearing about the team, particularly the number of long-serving staff who have been part of the hotel for many years. A great reflection of the people behind the business and the importance they place on hospitality.
