UPDATE: The tsunami warning has been downgraded, as the magnitude of the earthquake has been revised down to M5.9.

However, people on the west coast of the South Island, from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point, should still expect strong and unusual currents for several hours.

Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people. There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, and anyone in or near the water close to shore.

People are urged to stay away from the sea, beaches, harbours, marinas, rivers and estuaries.

People on boats, live-aboards and at marinas should leave their boats/vessels and move onto shore. Do not return to boats unless instructed by officials.

Do not go to the coast to watch the unusual wave activity as there may be dangerous and unpredictable surges.

We're proposing to subdivide JG Ward Reserve and sell approximately half of the land, including 38 Suir Street. The proceeds from the sale would be invested back into the remaining reserve, funding upgrades and formally classifying it as a reserve under the Reserves Act.

The harvest is ready once again!

This week, you’ll find spinach, silverbeet, kale, celery, and spring onions ready for picking opposite the Bluff Service Centre

Please take only what you need, leaving some kai for everyone to enjoy. Remember to pick just the leaves or produce, not the whole plant, so it can regrow and feed more people. Vegetables are spray-free, but please don’t forget to wash everything before eating!

Should all of Southland's councils merge into one? Should councils remain separate but share more services? Which services could be delivered together? What do you think would be the most efficient and affordable option for ratepayers?

If all of Southland’s councils merged together, we’d be looking after a population of more than 100,000 people.

Last year, Environment Southland undertook an analysis that indicated councils serving populations of more than 100,000 people can achieve greater efficiencies. Southland councils already work together on a range of services, but there may be opportunities to do more.

When the Stags run onto the field, we cheer for one team. But behind that jersey are communities with their own identities, strengths and priorities.

Some of the ideas being discussed include:

Establishing local boards with greater powers than community boards

Ensuring leadership is balanced, with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor coming from different areas. One representing urban Southland and one representing rural Southland.
