🚲 A fantastic new community partnership! 🚲

We are delighted to be partnering with Nick Watson from Sausage Dog Cycles. Nick collects unwanted and broken bicycles, repairs them and donates them back to the community – giving the bikes a new life and helping more people enjoy cycling.

Last week, Nick generously donated eight refurbished bicycles to our school. Our students were immediately on them and off, enjoying the opportunity to put them to good use!

Through Nick’s work with Hurunui District Council, the Council has also generously sponsored eight new helmets and a two-hour bicycle maintenance workshop. Nick will return towards the end of the term to teach our students practical skills so they can service and care for their own bikes.

We are also hoping to establish a bicycle maintenance station at school, where students can complete repairs and servicing as needed.

A huge thank you to Nick, Sausage Dog Cycles and Hurunui District Council for supporting this wonderful initiative. It promotes sustainability, safety, practical learning and plenty of active fun for our students! 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️🔧

Today we were delighted to welcome students and staff from Changping District, Beijing, to Cheviot Area School.

Our visitors were welcomed with a mihi whakatau before joining classes, taking part in cooking and soap carving, and enjoying playground games with our students.

It was wonderful to see friendships forming and cultures connecting through this special Hurunui–Changping sister district relationship. We were very proud of the warm Cheviot welcome shown by our students

🏉⚽🏐 Senior Students Leading the Way

Over the next few weeks, our Year 4–8 students will be taking part in touch rugby, football and netball coaching sessions led by students from our NCEA Level 1 and 2 Physical Education classes.

As part of their current NCEA unit standard, our senior PE students are required to develop their skills in coaching and refereeing a range of sports. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to put their learning into practice while sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with our younger students.

The weather was beautiful today, and everyone had a wonderful time learning new skills, being active and enjoying the chance to be coached by our seniors. It was great to see our older students stepping into leadership roles and our younger students engaging so positively in the sessions.

🎉 Congratulations to Maxim Cave! 🎉

We are incredibly proud to share that our Head Boy, Maxim Cave, received the Youth Volunteer Award at last night’s Hurunui Community Awards.

Maxim was recognised for his outstanding commitment to serving both his school and the wider Cheviot community, while balancing the many demands of being a senior secondary student and Head Boy.

Alongside the leadership he provides at Cheviot Area School, Maxim is also a member of the Cheviot Volunteer Fire Brigade, where he helps to keep our community safe. Both roles require dedication, responsibility and a willingness to step up and respond when needed.

Maxim leads by example and makes a positive contribution to school life and the wider community. His service to Cheviot is greatly appreciated, and he is a very deserving recipient of this year’s Youth Volunteer Award.

Congratulations, Maxim – we are so proud of you! 👏

A very warm welcome to all the new students and whānau who joined our Cheviot Area School family today. 💙

It was wonderful to come together for a mihi whakatau to welcome you, acknowledge this important new beginning, and help you feel at home in our school community.

We are so pleased to have you with us and look forward to getting to know each of you. We hope your time at Cheviot Area School will be filled with friendship, learning, new opportunities and a strong sense of belonging.

We hope all our students and whānau have enjoyed a restful break. We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday!

We’re very glad to hear that the road through to Conway is open again. We have been thinking of our families who were affected following the recent weather and hope things are beginning to return to normal for you.

A couple of reminders for the new term:

🥧 Our Pie Warmer Lunches and Breakfast Club will begin in Week 2. More information was included in the end-of-term newsletter, and we’ll repost the details later this week.

📢 Assemblies will now be held on Fridays from 2.20–3.00 pm. Please check the calendar on our school website for assembly dates. Our first whole-school assembly is this coming Friday, 24 July.

We’re looking forward to a positive and busy Term 3, with lots of exciting learning and events ahead. See you all on Monday!
