There’s something unmistakably Cheviot about the magpie. 🖤🤍

For generations, the black-and-white magpie has appeared on the shirts, badges and banners of Cheviot’s sporting teams, school groups, clubs and community organisations. What began as a local mascot has grown into something much bigger — a symbol of belonging and pride in our little rural community.

It’s a fitting emblem for Cheviot too. Magpies are bold, distinctive, spirited and fiercely connected to their patch — qualities that aren’t too far removed from a community that has always been proud of where it comes from and willing to rally together.

You’ll see the magpie in different forms around Cheviot, but the message is much the same: this is our place, our people and our team.

Through generations of players, pupils, volunteers and supporters, the magpie has become part of Cheviot’s visual history — an icon that connects the old with the new and instantly feels like home.

Hurunui District Council • September 1 at 3:02PM •
Busting weeds was the name of the game at Hutchison Reserve in Cheviot a couple of weeks ago.
The Hurunui Weedbusters came prepared to grapple with mud and willow saplings on their second mission to help the Jed River Catchment group at the Reserve's Woolshed Creek restoration site.
This project got underway in 2022 and first required removing willows along the banks. As many of these have re-sprouted, there was plenty of digging and hauling of branches.
Scolding pukekos seemed keen to see the workers off their patch.
The fact that they had moved in shortly after native planting began is an indication of the success of the project.
Hurunui Weedbusters is a joint initiative between the Hurunui District Council's Water and Land Coordinator Rima Herber, and the Hurunui Biodiversity Trust.

Cheviot's inaugural Death Cafe on Wednesday 16 September is part of this conversation, offering a safe space to talk about all things death and dying.
