๐Ÿ’™ You Belong to God | Social Justice Week 2026
This Social Justice Week, the New Zealand Catholic Bishops remind us of a simple but powerful truth:

โ€œI have called you by name, you are mine.โ€ โ€” Isaiah 43:1

Every person is created in the image of God. Our dignity does not depend on what we own, where we come from, what we have achieved, our health, our circumstances, or even the mistakes we have made. In Godโ€™s eyes, we belong.

For St Vincent de Paul, this goes to the very heart of our Vincentian vocation. When we meet someone struggling with poverty, homelessness, loneliness, illness or hardship, we are not simply meeting a โ€œclientโ€ or responding to a need. We are meeting a person loved by God โ€” someone with a name, a story, hopes, fears and an inherent dignity.

That is why our work must always be about more than food parcels, clothing, furniture or practical assistance. These things matter enormously, but they are also opportunities for relationship, listening, compassion and encounter. We are called to recognise Christ in the person before us and to make sure they know, through the way we treat them:

You matter. You are valued. You are not forgotten. You belong.

The Bishops invite us this week to defend human dignity wherever it is ignored or undermined โ€” particularly among those who are poor, homeless, elderly, unwell, living with disability, isolated or vulnerable.

For us as Vincentians, that invitation is very practical:

See the person.
Listen to their story.
Protect their dignity.
Walk alongside them.
Love without judgement.

Because charity is not simply what we give.

Charity is love โ€” and every person belongs to God. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ’™ Term 3 Young Vinnies โ€“ Can Drive

This Term 3, our Young Vinnies are taking action through our Can Drive! Students are leading the way by rallying support within their schools and encouraging their friends, families and wider school communities to get behind this important initiative.

Every can donated will help stock the local Vinnies Food Bank, providing essential food supplies to individuals and families in our community who may be experiencing hardship.

But the Can Drive is about more than collecting food itโ€™s about young people putting their faith into action. It gives our Young Vinnies the opportunity to lead, serve others and make a meaningful difference in their community.

The Caring for the Environment activity continues across our Mid and South Canterbury schools, encouraging Young Vinnies to explore how small actions can make a big difference in caring for our common home.

Through the activity, students will:

Learn about Laudato Siโ€™ and our responsibility to care for creation.
Explore practical ways to reduce waste and look after the environment.
Work together through a fun, hands-on challenge.
Identify one action they can take at school, at home or in their community.

Faith in Action: Caring for our environment is one way we show care for our neighbours, our community and future generations.

Caring for our environment is part of living out our Vincentian values. Laudato Siโ€™, Pope Francisโ€™ encyclical on caring for our common home, reminds us that we all have a responsibility to protect creation and look after one another.

Young Vinnies is taking part by raising awareness and encouraging young people to make simple, positive changesโ€”reducing waste, reusing and recycling, caring for our surroundings, and making responsible choices. Through our activities and service, we hope to inspire young people to become stewards of creation and make a difference in our communities and our common home.
