We had the pleasure of hosting Celia Wade-Brown on site this week, joining us at Onetahua to learn more about the community-led conservation work happening in this special place.

It was a great opportunity to share how well our partnership between iwi, Department of Conservation (DOC) and HealthPost Nature Trust is working, and see firsthand the amazing progress on the predator-proof fence.

Ngā mihi to Celia for taking the time to visit and learn more about what’s happening here 💚

Can you imagine flying from Aotearoa to Alaska and back 18 times??

With just the wind beneath your wings?

Stories like this stop you in your tracks.👇

Imagine a tiny bar-tailed godwit (no bigger than a dinner plate) lifting off from Aotearoa and flying all the way to Alaska. Then doing it all over again. Not once, not twice… but 18 times so far across its lifetime.

That’s tens of thousands of kilometres, guided by something we still don’t fully understand.

These remarkable manu connect us to places far beyond our shores, reminding us that what we do here matters locally, and globally.

We’re feeling quite humbled by that. Let’s keep protecting the places they return to. 💚

Out on the Parapara River

Spots like this are exactly the kind of place whio belong — fast-flowing water, bush-lined edges, and space to thrive.

While Pest Free Onetahua’s work is focused out on Farewell Spit, it’s all part of a bigger picture. Predator control across the landscape helps create safer homes for native species right across the region.

This Whio Awareness Week, we’re thinking about the rivers, streams and estuaries that connect it all, and the vital predator control work happening behind the scenes to protect them.

We know the fence is looking quite prominent at the moment - but watch for a transformation as the shiny capping will soon be painted ‘Karaka Green’ so it blends much more naturally into the landscape.👇💚
